Talking to One's Self

Does anyone apart from me talk to themselves. Just now, I had to clean the bathroom and didn't feel like doing it, so I said to myself "Look, get on with it and just be grateful you're not a Victorian maid of all work!" Does that make me bonkers.? [it does help, though]

I swear at myself I am forever dropping things on the floor you name it I drop it this has only started happening in the last year when I drop something I am "offs what's wrong with you pick it up"

Well, I started the habit in my home, but am now beginning to mutter when I walk along the street grin - cultivating battiness methinks!

My DIL does it all the time when she is concentrating. She says quite a lot if she is working on something, but she is thinking out loud. It is noticeable but there is definitely nothing wrong with her, hmm she is very smart and energetic and gets things done. I am sure she has never once procrastinated in her life. Maybe talking to yourself is a good sign.

I talk to myself a lot when I'm fishing, ranging from dark muttering when someone else on the bank is catching and I'm not, to verbally willing the fish to take the fly, to saying nice soothing things to the fish when you unhook it and release it back into the water, to cursing roundly when you find you've waded further up a river than you intended and there's no way to get out without an undignified muddy scramble! That's when you tell yourself loudly that you are getting too old for it all!

I talk to myself all the time in the house. It only started after DH died. It helps to get things into perspective and there is no one else to talk to most of the time, so it relieves the boredom! I used to laugh at my Aunt as she wandered around talking away to herself, but now I understand. I keep my thoughts to myself when out, although I have heard myself occasionally say out loud 'you're welcome' or 'you * * * *' when holding a door open for someone who doesn't acknowledge me grin

No Wot you are not "bonkers" I talk to myself all the time!

Sometimes I feel like "I" am the only person I can get any sense from !

Sometimes I give myself a running commentary of what I am doing, which I think acts as a coping mechanism of the task ahead.

Yes wot, I'm another one - seems as if we're all at it! I talk to myself when I'm annoyed with myself, something along the lines of, "Oh for Heaven's sake, Indi, if you'd started this earlier you wouldn't have to rush - you've only got yourself to blame!" And then I'll answer with "I know, just shut up, I haven't got time to talk now." Only when I'm in the house on my own, of course wink
And I have the 'practice' conversations too, tanith. I remember once walking back to the office from my lunch break and the security officer was standing chuckling at me. "What?" I said. "That was quite a conversation you were having with nobody!" he said. I didn't even realise I'd been moving my lips - apparently I'd been quite animated. Oh dear blush

I've done it all my life - I blame the fact I'm an only child and always wanted siblings so invented some to talk to. I also swear at myself for doing stupid things or when inanimate objects won't behave - luckily most of the time there's no one around to hear me grin

I think it is perfectly okay to talk to yourself – but just don't look in the mirror while you are doing it!

Imperfect27 Sat 27-Feb-16 07:49:16

I wonder if the rot sets in with motherhood? My DD told me that she has started to 'chatter' to baby and gives a running commentary to him when she is getting ready after his morning feed. Last weekend he was downstairs with his daddy and she was halfway through getting dressed when she realised she was telling an empty room that she was putting her socks on! grin

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 27-Feb-16 07:57:58

Yep, I'm on my own a lot and chunter away to myself. If I say things out loud I'm less likely to forget what I'm doing. Don't care who knows about it either! grin

I think I must do without realising it....as a while ago grandson whos 9 came into the kitchen and said "who you talking to"!! hmm I said "no one" he said "yes you were talking to someone" ! smile

cornergran Sat 27-Feb-16 08:14:59

I chat away to myself. A friend used to say 'and sure you couldn't talk to a better person'. I sort of assume everyone does it. smile.

Don't worry about seeming batty talking to yourself walking down the street. For a long time I thought the numbers of batty people around had increased enormously until I realised they were all talking on their hands free mobile phones. Just plug in a set of headphones - no need to attach them to anything, and you will look dead cool, and not batty at all! Indoors, I talk to the cats regardless of whether they are in the room.

Snowdrop Sat 27-Feb-16 09:53:05

I do it all the time, as I'm the only one who knows what I mean it seems silly not to grin

spanishsue Sat 27-Feb-16 13:16:05

All the time! And aloud as well! I also sing whilst out walking as I'm a ladies Barbershop newbie and need to learn songs and !music! Also, chunnering, which I've never heard of, I think, is the same as chuntering, which is what I do!

If you find yourself doing this while out and about and people look, start speaking urgently up your sleeve, they'll think you are part of a security operation.smile

rosesarered Tue 08-Mar-16 08:33:40

Either that, or they'll come and take you away, ha-ha.

I rarely talk to myself, even though I live alone. However, last week I made some roasted cauliflower 'rice' for the first time, with onions and bacon through it, and it was so tasty that I shouted something like 'wow this is delicious!' I felt rather stupid afterwards, especially as the nearby sleeping cat jumped a mile into the air!

henetha Tue 08-Mar-16 10:01:29

Yes, but my excuse is that I'm talking to Wiggy (my cockatiel). (smile)

henetha Tue 08-Mar-16 10:01:50

smile

sunseeker Tue 08-Mar-16 11:39:14

Every morning when I tell myself to "move your arse and get out of bed!!"

grannylyn65 Tue 08-Mar-16 16:33:14

Yes, but is usually rude!!!

For a while before I divorced my ex-husband, we spent most of our time in separate rooms, so the habit of talking to myself may have started then. Certainly when you live alone, as others have said, you talk to yourself and to all sorts of other things that are around, from spiders to microwave ovens. And reminding yourself what needs doing. In the street I do wonder how many other people talk to themselves outdoors.
