Talking to One's Self

Does anyone apart from me talk to themselves. Just now, I had to clean the bathroom and didn't feel like doing it, so I said to myself "Look, get on with it and just be grateful you're not a Victorian maid of all work!" Does that make me bonkers.? [it does help, though]

No, I never had an imaginary friend when I was little, and I don't remember any friends who did either. Perhaps it's a more recent invention.

I was an only child and our dog was my best mate and more biddable than any sibling so I didn't need a pretend friend.

Did anybody really had invisible friends when they were a child? I remember trying, but it just didn't work.

I sing quietly when out too. I hope it's quietly.

Think I will find myself an invisible friend. Never had one as a child, but better late than never! grin

I don't talk to myself - I have an invisible friend. We have quite lengthy discussions.

My DH doesn't talk to himself either - it's to the radio, the cooker, the boat, the wind, the other car driver ......

I am constantly talking to myself as my DC and DGC do not appear to be able to hear my voice!!! After some question or comment I often ask the wall if it is listening - still no response!

Why should I talk to myself when I can have a perfectly intelligent conversation with the cat ?

gulligranny Tue 08-Mar-16 19:43:19

I talk to myself all the time, and I have no excuse as I don't live alone ...
I even sing (quietly) around my local supermarket. I know I'm doing it and I try to stop myself, but it's a losing battle I'm afraid.

For a while before I divorced my ex-husband, we spent most of our time in separate rooms, so the habit of talking to myself may have started then. Certainly when you live alone, as others have said, you talk to yourself and to all sorts of other things that are around, from spiders to microwave ovens. And reminding yourself what needs doing. In the street I do wonder how many other people talk to themselves outdoors.

Yes, but is usually rude!!!

sunseeker Tue 08-Mar-16 11:39:14

Every morning when I tell myself to "move your arse and get out of bed!!"

smile

henetha Tue 08-Mar-16 10:01:29

Yes, but my excuse is that I'm talking to Wiggy (my cockatiel). (smile)

I rarely talk to myself, even though I live alone. However, last week I made some roasted cauliflower 'rice' for the first time, with onions and bacon through it, and it was so tasty that I shouted something like 'wow this is delicious!' I felt rather stupid afterwards, especially as the nearby sleeping cat jumped a mile into the air!

rosesarered Tue 08-Mar-16 08:33:40

Either that, or they'll come and take you away, ha-ha.

rosesarered Tue 08-Mar-16 08:32:45

If you find yourself doing this while out and about and people look, start speaking urgently up your sleeve, they'll think you are part of a security operation.smile

All the time! And aloud as well! I also sing whilst out walking as I'm a ladies Barbershop newbie and need to learn songs and !music! Also, chunnering, which I've never heard of, I think, is the same as chuntering, which is what I do!

Snowdrop Sat 27-Feb-16 09:53:05

I do it all the time, as I'm the only one who knows what I mean it seems silly not to grin

Don't worry about seeming batty talking to yourself walking down the street. For a long time I thought the numbers of batty people around had increased enormously until I realised they were all talking on their hands free mobile phones. Just plug in a set of headphones - no need to attach them to anything, and you will look dead cool, and not batty at all! Indoors, I talk to the cats regardless of whether they are in the room.

I chat away to myself. A friend used to say 'and sure you couldn't talk to a better person'. I sort of assume everyone does it. smile.

bikergran Sat 27-Feb-16 07:58:57

I think I must do without realising it....as a while ago grandson whos 9 came into the kitchen and said "who you talking to"!! hmm I said "no one" he said "yes you were talking to someone" ! smile

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 27-Feb-16 07:57:58

Yep, I'm on my own a lot and chunter away to myself. If I say things out loud I'm less likely to forget what I'm doing. Don't care who knows about it either! grin

I wonder if the rot sets in with motherhood? My DD told me that she has started to 'chatter' to baby and gives a running commentary to him when she is getting ready after his morning feed. Last weekend he was downstairs with his daddy and she was halfway through getting dressed when she realised she was telling an empty room that she was putting her socks on! grin
