Half Term Horrors

A pair of litter-brothers or of litter-sisters will get along well together without adding to the guinea-pig population, too, without being neutered. However, once the brothers meet a female and find out what they have been missing, they tend to dislike one another. Two sisters will agree for life.

It has been known, though, for what were thought to be the same sex to turn out to be a breeding pair. The babies are just gorgeous, born with fur and open eyes and running about at once. They are milk-fed for a few weeks, but they start to nibble adult food in a day or two, and should be gently handled from the start to get them accustomed to humans.

Castafiore: re small pets for DGC- really recommend a (neutered) pair of guinea pigs as very easy to handle and tend not to struggle. The RSPCA where I used to volunteer say rabbits are the most abused pets in the UK as most people keep them alone and in hutches that are far too small - they need lots of room to run and play and should never be kept singly. When the novelty wears off many end up confined to their cage full time and get miserable and cranky, not surprisingly.

I only had a brief visit from my grandsons this half term, which suited me as I'm not well just now and we are having the pair of them for a week at Easter. On Saturday they arrived in time for elevenses, then we all went to visit my son in law's grave as it would have been his birthday. We then piled into the local restaurant for a family lunch as I wasn't up to cooking. The two boys are aged three and six and are very at ease when dining out, especially in this particular restaurant where they're great favourites with the staff. It was lovely to see them, but I was glad to go home and crawl back into bed. I'll make up for it at Easter no doubt.

Morethan - I really do sympathise. It's so hard to be the onlooker and want to fix things, but know you can't. Sending you (((hugs))).

just picked up your thread morethan. It is so unimaginable for those of us who have not gone through such trauma, but thinking of you with tears in my eyes. Your DGCs will need you more than ever in the next months. Thoughts and all that. how are things today? Stay strong

I looked after my DGD twice this week and we spent a freezing hour in the park where she jumped on icy puddles and ran around with little rosy cheeks, then on Friday I took her to feed the ducks which she enjoyed, no problems, we also went shopping and I bought her an outfit. A super weeks break from nursery school. I loved every minute of it.

downtoearth Your description of clothes-buying with a teenager made me laugh.

My Dad always used to laugh about the time he came with my 9 year old daughter and I to Crawley to buy her a coat/mac. We traipsed round dozens of shops, tried on dozens of coats and then, thoroughly exhausted and disheartened, returned to the first shop and bought the first coat she'd tried on (which , if my recollection is correct, she was then reluctant to wear).

As to food and children, if we are going out locally we go to Toby Carvery where there is a good choice of vegetables (for us and them), freshly roasted meat and a pleasant atmosphere. They enjoy pointing out the food they want, and the amount they want.

If we are in Central London, we go to China Town.

Blinko: on the subject of penises (penii?), I had been explaining the difference between men and women to DD1. As a single mother, she had only ever seen pictures of a penis, but became very curious...

Bus journey to the shops one day, bus is full, little voice pipes up
'Mummy, has THAT man got a penis?'. Entire bus turned to look; we got off at the next stop!
