What were you really good at?

I wasn't outstanding at anything but always 'had a go'.

My mantra has always been, "Never let a lack of talent cramp your style."
and that's what I tell my little granddaughter too.

Perfection can be very intimidating don't you think?

Languages and dancing.

I don't think I excelled at anything, ever .
Was athletic, running, high/long jumps and was in the tennis team. I've always preferred individual sports over team games.
English, 'composition', spelling, reading at school. History and maths didn't hold much interest then, but as I age find history fascinating.

I loved wild flowers and could identify most by age eight. Still can though they are harder to find now.

Hopeless at maths (although not bad at straightforward arithmetic now).
Good at languages (French and Spanish) and loved English and History.
Still do!

I was a fast runner, 220yds. In the relay team for Northumberland at the county sports one year. But now my cranky knees stop me running at all.

Hopeless at sport, totally unco-ordinated, still am. I was good at reading, English, spelling (I can "see" the words in my minds eye). In my first year at secondary school I came top overall in the exams, an achievement never repeated, sadly. To my mind, I have never excelled at anything, I am still always looking for the one thing that everyone is supposed to be good at.

When I was younger I always thought of myself as mediocre at everything - neither outstanding nor dreadful (except at sport, which I couldn't play at all because of my severe asthma). One year I was top of the class in Latin and cookery, but I never repeated that 'success'!
However, I've come to terms with that now, and reckon I can count myself as being good at being steady and reliable, not such a bad thing.

Talking about this with my cousin yesterday by coincidence. I found logarithms really easy and couldn't understand why others didn't, same with reported speech, found English and Maths so simple and logical that it was frustrating when others didn't. However, history was so boring and what was the point of geography, it was all so far away?

Pretty much anything that wasn't maths or geography. I was really good at tying knots - at Brownies and Guides.

Oh, and a friend and I beat everyone hollow in the 3 legged race on Junior school sports day. We'd worked out that you had to synchronise legs!

Reading, writing and arithmetic. I don't know what happened to the latter as I only just scraped a GCE pass in maths. Poor teaching and boys I suspect..

At the moment I think I'm being very good at being a granny..

Woodwork, metalwork, physics, technical drawing. I won the egg & spoon race at primary school, I was the only one who cold see that you don't hold the spoon with a rigid arm.

Singing and languages for me. I didn't begin singing lessons until I left school, as there were no singing teachers in our area, and I think my parents would have thought it was a bit " show offy" to send me!

Who knows, I might have been famous!

Ice skating. I loved it so much. I would beg my parents for the 6 shillings it cost to get into the rink. I used to walk there and back because I didn't have the bus fare. (a couple of miles each way.) I would have loved to have had lessons but knew they were too expensive. I was also good at English, art, and PE.

Reading and writing.

Interesting that so many of the commenters on this thread have said the same thing. I think that Gransnet is generally notable for its intelligent, articulate, literate commenters. The level of accuracy in spelling, punctuation, grammar and breadth of vocabulary is way above average.

I was very sporty - Captain of the netball team, on the school tennis and rounders teams. In athletics I threw the discus and javelin, did long jump and ran hurdles. Out of school I played badminton in winter and tennis in summer with the Church groups. In the holidays it was tennis every day.

English was my favourite and best subject but I was also good at French, History and Geography. Hated physics though!

I like to think I was a good employee.... punctual, honest and hard working. At least, I think so!
But English was always my best subject at school and I've never lost my love of reading and writing. I was useless at everything else.

English, Latin, Music (especially piano) and was goal shooter for our county netball team. I was 5'11" at the age of eleven, so had a ridiculous advantage!

Me too Ana and being good at English helped me all through my working life. I was always good at calming angry or distressed people because I was empathetic then and still am.

French, spelling and Music. I was rubbish at science, though in today's culture I now realise that was the teacher's fault.

Reading, spelling & writing. I think I took after my father who, if he saw any spelling mistakes in shop displays, would go in to tell the shopkeeper! I was so embarrassed! The best was a butcher selling "lion chops"

English and PE,football,played in the boys school team,no girls teams in those days .

I was quite good on the piano and also good at art at school ... no longer have the piano having given it to the daughter and only artistic outlet is card-making!
