That's very far up oneself indeed!
What was directly across the road from the school you went to?
This may seem to many like a repeat of the 'internet manners' discussion that was aired recently, but I wanted to revisit the heart of this matter because of recent developments.
I recently raised a question about texting birth announcements on the AIBU forum recently and unwittingly provoked all sorts of reactions, incurring rudeness and insensitivity along the way. I am not posting here to carp about that, but to highlight it as illustrative of a wider problem.
I am relatively new to GN, but as a result of that thread I received several emails from people who are evidently upset about the way some GNetters post. I suspect there are even more who felt the same. Some are newly arrived, but say they have been put off posting full-stop. Some say they are leaving GN because they are genuinely dismayed at the levels of unkindness expressed and what seem to be pointedly negative / aggressive /insensitive comments. Sometimes when people have raised concern on the forums they feel they have been then publicly shot down in flames and it is usually suggested that they are too sensitive. Some people feel that others assume they are right no matter what and that they have an apparent right because they are longer term members.
I am not writing here to 'preach', or 'carp', or 'point the finger' - rather to think of solutions. none of us are saints and we are going to make errors and misread posts at times. Sometimes something is said 'tongue in cheek', but is taken as offensive. These sort of misunderstandings can be checked out and in my experience a PM often does the trick. However, like many who have emailed me, I honestly think some posts are an awful advert for this site and I really understand why others are put off.
Sometimes the problem may be that when a thread becomes very long it is tempting to skip and just add our own view. Sometimes what we discuss is indeed sensitive and emotive and we can find ourselves reacting strongly. I think it is a good idea to at least skim read other posts and to take time to consider views that may differ from our own and also to keep in mind that this is indeed a public forum.
Perhaps the litmus tests are
* would you actually say the same to someone's face?
* would you feel embarrassed if others actually knew who you were?
*would you mind your views being requoted in public?
Well, I have put my head above the parapet. I have done so because I genuinely like GN, but like others who have emailed me, I have been really dismayed at the way some posts develop and feel that at times we don't actually do ourselves any credit. I also think it is truly sad that a significant amount of people are evidently put off taking a full part in discussions.
That's very far up oneself indeed!
Some of you are so far up yourselves you can't see your feet. Blimey, talk about looking down your nose at other people.
Because surely that would be a physical impossibility?
In view of the OP I thought pollyparrot's post was meant to be ironic.
girls ? ONW?
Quite right Greenfinch
GN could be a lifeline to some who are unable to get out, could be lonely due to circumstances beyond their control.
I think "elegrans hit the nail on the head_excellent comment!!
Why must some people be so judgemental ?People can spend as long on Gransnet as they like. It is nobody else's business.
Hit the ball, not the player, ONW You have no idea how much time posters have to devote to GN or why they have that time, nor anything else about them.
You don't need it with your full working life? But you have time to criticise others.
The problem with any forum is we cannot see the lives of people we post to and about, and only see/understand snippets of their lives.
Read my post properly, ONW. I did not call you cruel. I was referring to your opinion of some gransnet members.
I agree with trish.
I think that "get a life" thing is cruel.
And how can you find time to drink wine all evening if you go out to work, let alone read GN and criticise!!
Disheartening (?) or just to be expected that a thread purporting to appeal for "more thoughtful posting" engenders a response like this. Not to mention a lot of sniping and backbiting.
My honest opinion is that many on here take themselves far too seriously. Some of you are so far up yourselves you can't see your feet. Blimey, talk about looking down your nose at other people.
I honestly think some need to lighten up and let things go. This thread isn't worthy of intelligent up beat women, it smacks of moaning old women, with idle hands
You are all ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ aren't you?
Please please can someone point me in the direction of all this rudeness and unkindness? Most of the discussions I post on seem to be gentle conversations with the occasional disagreement. Or maybe I have problems because I am used to having to argue a point and having my statements questioned. Never mind "say something nice" I prefer "Can you prove/justify that?" or even "can you say something cheeky/rude/insulting" because I need a laugh.
How can you say that Older, when you've probably never experienced a life which is more restricted due health, finances and age?
Read it properly merlot, before you call me cruel (you don't even know me) - I did not say "go OUT and let a life", just get one. "Out" referred to the real world out there.
No wonder poeple can't be bothered with this stuff ...
You may not always be able to work, older(and no wiser)
Thank you merlotI am one who spends a lot of time on GN.
I struggle to get out more than twice a week as I am a carer. Believe me there are many times when working outside the home would seem an easier option.
I find the time because ill do a job and then have a look at GN etc for a few minutes and then go and do something else. If you work, I guess you have a few moments of conversation here and there. GN is similar, especially for housebound people.
That's rather cruel, OlderNoWiser. I believe there are people who are unable to go out and 'get a life' as you put it and find Gransnet a welcome diversion.
Catching up with this thread after a long, hard days' work I would agree with pollyparrot and get the impression that there seem to be a lot of people here with very little to do - where on earth do they find the time to chat all day, every day, irrespective of whether their comments are nice or nasty.
Maybe instead of the various bits of advice, well intentioned or not, one should be "get a life, girls, there's a real world out there". If this is what retirement does for you I will keep working until I drop ...
Pass the wine, it's the weekend
My honest opinion is that many on here take themselves far too seriously. Some of you are so far up yourselves you can't see your feet. Blimey, talk about looking down your nose at other people.
Does that include the OP pollyparrot?
Jane10 My reaction would be the same.
Ooh, yes, you can get some very scathing put-downs if you suggest that someone 'lightens up'! But there again, that would probably be among the OP's list of objections, as would pollyparrot's post...
Agree with Anya and Pollyparrot.
Nonnie no one else had referred to the fact that the OP was a teacher so it was obvious that you were talking about me, even though you didn't address your remarks to me directly.
I'm not sure why it's particularly 'interesting'
