Tv prog has really unsettled me

I need some help here. I did not see the first series so I am a bit behind. I am trying to work out about Perez's marital situation. I am assuming that his daughter is his daughter and not a step-daughter; and that the man who he keeps having arguments with is his ex-wife's second husband (?) - or his estranged wife's first husband - or is he a widower? Help!

Not absolutely sure, lucky, but I think he's a widower and the guy he argues with was his late wife's 2nd husband i.e. his daughter's step father. Of course then again, maybe the girl's mum just upsticked and left the lot of them cos she couldn't stand the bleakness and high crime rate on Shetland!

Cassie is Perez's step-daughter, the child of his (deceased) wife Fran and her first husband Duncan.
As far as I remember in the last series she had been brought up by her mother and her step-father on the mainland but then Perez and Cassie went to live on Shetland after her mother died.
I think she said she wanted to live with her biological father Duncan at one point in the last series, probably because he lets her have her own way and Perez is more strict but a good (step) father.

I think that's it.

The daughter is his step-daughter who he moved to Shetland with. The other man is her real Father who came later into her life. His dead wife was from Shetland which was the reason for the move, I cannot remember if she was already dead when they moved.

Were the two older people Perez visited in Glasgow his parents-in-law? The ones who had the break-in and had the photo stolen of his wife? I assumed so.

I didn't realise that Julie Graham played the Procurator Fiscal, I thought she was the Chief of Police on the islands.

I'm guessing so as well Jalima. Really enjoying the story though - apart from the lad in the container which I found upsetting as well as others on here. Scenery is amazing - would love to go there

I think the unsettling comes from situations that we can relate to as actually being able to happen in real life rather than just being TV or film imaginings. The Shining had a hugely disturbing impact on me because I realised that it could actually happen, put me off horror films for quite a while.

I didn't like the container scenes either.

Rhona as Jimmy's boss confuses me too because in RL on Shetland there's a Procurator Fiscal and a Chief Inspector, both based Lerwick. So if Jimmy is only a Detective Inspector, who's the Chief Inspector? I might be over thinking this!

I thought the character Anna Chancellor played was the Procurator Fiscal but when you have one eye on GN and one eye on the tele, you're bound to miss something. If she wasn't the PF, who was she? Nice to see Anna Chancellor back on tv.

Cassie is Perez's stepdaughter. Different from the books where she is only about 7. In book she is the daughter of his dead fiancee who was killed on the Faroe Islands. She bequeathed Cassie into his care. Very confusing as the latest Shetland wasn't even written by Ann Cleaves.

Fran is married to Duncan and they have a DD Cassie.

Their marriage breaks down and Perez marries Fran, becoming step-father to Cassie.

Fran dies - ?how

Duncan is off the scene as far as Cassie is concerned and only appears and takes an interest at some later date - ? after Fran's death.

Perez has problems with the interference by Duncan as Perez has been Cassie's father figure.

Then in the last series I think Perez was upset because Cassie said she wanted to live with her Dad
Perez is a stable father figure but Duncan is a bit of a womaniser and is a bit laissez-faire about what Cassie does. I think he left Fran and Cassie.

Ah! - many thanks. It is all coming clear to me now, which is more than I can say for the accents and the dark cinematography - but I love it and wouldn't miss it!

Anna Chancellor is a PF, but of for a different area of Scotland. That's why Jimmy flew to meet up with her and the Witness Protection people. I got the impression her character and Rhona are/were more than 'good friends'.

My feelings also WilmaKnickersfit- just from the eye contact, lingering looks and the occasional touching of a sleeve led me to believe that there was more to their relationship.

There certainly was a fair bit of smouldering going on Charleygirl.

This present series is a bit better but, after backtracking a few times to listen again to a bit we couldn't make out, we gave in and put the sub-titles on again.

Certainly between Dougie Henshall and that policewoman i/c of the witness protection.
but who could blame her
