My DS and DinL regularly have an alcohol free January and I am wondering whether to join them. Anyone else tried it ?

Cheers wine

Yes granjura. I hate food waste, probably because I was born just after the war and brought up not to waste anything.

We also had an all inc holiday in Egypt and the vodka drinking started in the morning. One morning I went to the bar to get a cup of coffee and a Russian lady in front of me was very rude to the barman, instructing him to put more vodka in the glass etc. He served her with an expressionless face and then turned to me with a big grin and said 'Hello darlin' what can I get for you'.

Liz46- wouldn't it be nice if you could choose to go 'all inclusive' at much cheaper rates, where only a small amount of alcohol and normal amount of food is consumed. I'd really resent going 'all inc.' and pay for the massive excesses of the few (or too many). I'd much rather pay for what we actually eat and consume- as all inc. really leads to massive food waste.

An al inclusive buffer restaurant near where we live has started a new policy of 'eat all you want but don't waste it' - and they will charge an extra 5Euros if you throw food away- great idea. I went to a Hôtel in Sharm-el-Sheik with a friends, all incl. and it was truly sickening to see (sorry, an observation I'm afraid, not prejudiced, Russians mainly) - have 2 plate fulls then have a third- and just leave it on table untouched, again and again. Considering that staff and their families often did without- even more so.

I don't like taking anything to extremes so I shall be doing 2/5. That way I can choose which days to be alcohol free. That's the 2 by the way.

Hangover today after a lovely NYE party. So a good start for dry January. Have stocked up on the lemon and ginger tea which will now be my evening tipple.

Lots of benefits are mentioned at www.sussex.ac.uk/broadcast/read/27612 even if you don't do the whole month.

I think I am going to give it a go. I had some gin last night - i haven't drunk gin for a long time, and i feel atrocious this morning sad. I think i'm losing my taste for alcohol lately anyway - i was drinking to be sociable last night! But nobody needs to be THAT sociable!!

Anya Fri 01-Jan-16 11:49:01

Eirel hmm

Liz46 Fri 01-Jan-16 11:37:28

I will do my best to be dry until the 20th. We are going on an 'all inclusive' in Cuba so hopefully three dry weeks will prepare my liver for the onslaught!

I could get more done if I had a Gransnet-free January tchgrin

granjura Thu 31-Dec-15 18:51:43

Starting tonight in fact not to be 'virtuous' - but we have been drinking quite a bit for the past 10 days, with friends and family- and we are on our own tonight, and really don't fancy any booze at all. Won't go 'alcohol' free in Jan- we just hardly ever drink when on our own- apart from a night-cup of best Malt once in a blue moon. If we go out of have friends for dinner, we will have a drink or two- and that's that. Santé wine

Anya Thu 31-Dec-15 16:36:15

Yes roses or dig a deep hole in the garden and bury it - just like squirrels do with their nuts tchgrin

rosequartz Thu 31-Dec-15 16:19:51

Does that mean I will have to finish the whole bottle tonight?
(can't bear waste, can't throw good wine away) grin

I will give it a miss if you don't mind ... as I don't smoke, don't touch processed meat of any kind, don't do junk food and take plenty of exercise there is literally nothing else in my life that is remotely bad for me - surely everybody needs ONE vice wink

friends123 Wed 30-Dec-15 09:35:14

Thank you Mrs Mopp

AlgeswifeVal Wed 30-Dec-15 09:13:24

I have rum and coke or rose wine, don't like anything else. I do hate smoking though and hate anyone smoking around me.

During our September Dryathlon we found the key elements to staying dry were support and encouragement of fellow g/netters, distractions at 'wobble' times and a replacement beverage for when the urge hits.
I 'met' wonderful kindred spirits last time who continue to offer invaluable support and friendship in other areas of my life to whom I am ever grateful - you know who you are smile (((heart emoticon)))

I turned to exercise/walking/running/writing during my 'wobble' times and I found that a small measure of red grape shloer topped up with sparkling water (drunk from a wine glass at meal times) satisfied any 'urges'wink
Mostly I missed my Friday nights when DH and I enjoy a glass or three with a nice steak - (I was lucky in that he joined me in abstaining during the week) - but once started I didn't really struggle when others had a wine

The feeling of well-being, the weight-loss and increased level of fitness (not to mention smugness grin) carried me through - but mostly it was the genuine affection and support received from the September Dryathlon 'gang' grin

baNANAGran3 Wed 30-Dec-15 08:14:30

Ah NanKate hopefully by the end of January I won't be wobbling quite so much... smile

NanKate Wed 30-Dec-15 07:37:53

I think I will find the first few days tricky as I really like a sherry and oatcake whilst I am getting the supper.

I too am determined to lose a few pounds so will be watching my food intake as well.

I will be relying on my fellow GNetters for encouragement and hope to offer similar support to other wobblers smile

Granby Wed 30-Dec-15 01:18:18

I have 'dry Monday to Thursday', and that's about all I can manage! Dry January sounds horrific! January's bad enough as it is!

baNANAGran3 Tue 29-Dec-15 23:59:25

I'm going abstain from the 4th and I have a wine tasting group night during the month so January won't count as being a completely dry month for me but as I look forward to a glass or two six nights a week it will still be a pretty big sacrifice - will help to be able to keep in touch with this thread! x
