Diversity

Soontobe has made a point that there should be more diversity on GN.
What do others think?
It is a tricky one because first of all GN is open to all who choose to contribute, but obviously self-selecting to a degree just by the site name and target group.
It is also hard to establish the degree of diversity among members as we retain anonymity and are under no obligation to reveal or even refer to ethnic background, religious affiliation, physical or any other disability, political inclination ( well some people are very clear on that, but not necessarily all) education, age, colour or shoe size.
So who's to say?
Does it really matter?
tchconfused

rosequartz Sun 13-Dec-15 16:32:12

I don't think anyone should rely on Gransnet as their sole source of information, that way would lie confusion.

Although I am already confused by this thread

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 16:36:24

Definitely not, but things like you saying what is happening in places that you have charity links with, is helpful. Plus granjura from the Swiss border. Plus those posters from France, and those with links from the US.
Wouldnt it be great to have posters from every country in the world? First hand, albeit internet knowledge from countries affected by climate change for example?

Elegran Sun 13-Dec-15 16:38:32

I'd say that most of the posters on here are pretty well informed about everything. Some of them do hammer on about their pet themes, granted, and some don't seem to know how to tie their own shoelaces without one-to-one tuition on every thread, but the majority can discuss a variety of subjects with sense. There are people with personal and professional experience of all kinds of things and they are very generous in sharing their knowledge.

Posters from origins and backgrounds that are not well enough represented just need to post to say what they think and why their view is not quite the same as another poster's - they won't be eaten alive unless they start off by insulting the poster they are replying to, and no-one would be so rude as to do that, would they? It would be like joining a real live conversation by punching the speaker on the nose - not a good way to start.

Alea Sun 13-Dec-15 16:45:02

Do you know what I think, I think soontobe just loves feeling she is somehow the centre of attention. Make a few stupid outrageous remarks and then sit back while everybody gets their knickers in a twist indignant saying what tosh it all is.
I find the obsession with the details of what people post sad disturbing and intrusive, not to mention creepy. If there really have nothing else to fill a life, well so be it, but there is a real world our there and this sort of online obsssing is unhealthy, virtually amounting to stalking.
We have seen the "naive" (ooh, some people are using long words some of us might not understand) the "religious fundamentalist"( it's not belief when it is fact) the prejudiced supporter supporter of Trump and Hopkins and refusal to accept what people who know might have to say (" well I know of one poster who lives in London and attends mosque regularly") oops, wrong there, and the custodian of personal details (" I have seen TWO pictures of you Alea") - so flippin what.
Enough of this ego trip.

Anniebach Sun 13-Dec-15 16:52:09

soon, how can you say you want to be better informed on world matters? You dismissed what the Met and the London Mayor said about that idiot trumps claims about London and chose to believe Trump

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 16:59:10

I didnt dismiss, I sat on the fence on the matter.
And the reason I sat on the fence? Because gransnetters have far too little knowledge to go on.

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 16:59:55

If we even just take a lurk on gransnet, they are streets ahead of us, information wise, on some topics.

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 17:01:47

grr, mumsnet.

Alea, I mentioned two pictures as you claimed/couldnt remember that you posted any.

Ana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:02:33

Eh? tchconfused

Alea Sun 13-Dec-15 17:03:24

And the reason I sat on the fence? Because gransnetters have far too little knowledge to go on

Speak for yourself, not in my name.

Ana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:03:50

Perhaps you'd be happier on Mumsnet then, soontobe you could ask them all the questions you ask on here and would get loads more responses...

petra Sun 13-Dec-15 17:05:36

Rosequaze. Your post of 14.10 Re. "You don't sound like you Soon"
I have thought that several times lately. Sometimes her posts almost make sense. Or mabe I'm going gaga.

Alea. Your post 16.45. I've been saying this for months. There are many words that we all want to use, but can't. I have, at times but they have very quickly been taken down.

Soontobe. How very sad that you have to rely on this forum for your information and views of the world.

ninathenana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:05:37

A lot of is do lurk on Mumsnet.

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 17:07:36

I have come to realise that some gransnetters are here for a chat only.
Fair enough, but this is a public forum. Nothing private about it. Perhaps it was more private a few years ago, when it started. Virtually nothing has been deleted on this forum for 4 years either. Perhaps there is a case for gransnet, and other forums for that matter, deleting past posts?

Ana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:10:47

You're the one who keeps wittering on about Gransnet not being 'private', soontobe - no one else seems bothered about that aspect of it (or they weren't until you started sowing the seeds of doubt....hmm)

petallus Sun 13-Dec-15 17:14:00

I have only just realised that soon did not start this thread, Alea did so on her behalf.

Why? It would be simpler if people confined themselves to posting their own opinions, not those of others.

For the record, I'm not a bit bothered if soon or anyone else wants to collect info on me from my posts on GN.

rosequartz Sun 13-Dec-15 17:18:40

Or mabe I'm going gaga
petra in between rapping wrapping and popping in to look at this thread I think I have reached that gaga stage.

Fait accompli

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 17:21:54

Alea didnt on my behalf petallus. I too was confused as to why she couldnt post it without me. But whatever, I didnt really mind.

Ana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:24:15

She did post it without you, soontobe. Because you seemed to be reluctant to do so and were using another thread to air your views on the subject...

ninathenana Sun 13-Dec-15 17:24:16

I have come to realise that some gransnetters are here for a chat only
What other reason is there ?
I thought asking others opinions or advice was all part of chatting the same as I do with my RL friends. If I need information I use Google not GN.

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 17:27:25

It wasnt my idea to start a diversity thread. I was just agreeing with a poster[havent looked to see if it was Alea or not].

ninathenana. Knowledge, company, enjoyment, fun, interaction, diversion from work/housework! To name but a few.

Alea Sun 13-Dec-15 17:33:07

I do apologise if you feel I should not have started a thread based on a comment by another poster.
Well, actually I don't apologise at all and I take exception to the thread police suggesting I or anybody else " should confine myself to my own opinions and not those of others" - patronising or what? Raising a subject following on from what somebody has said, isn't that how discussions can start?
I asked a question about a topic which might have led to fruitful discussion if it had not reverted to the usual topic.
IMHO high handed petallus

Anniebach Sun 13-Dec-15 17:38:27

soon, get out of denial, it was the Met and the London Mayor who said Trump was wrong, not anyone here yet you say you sat on the fence , right I will be honest with you soon, you have a desperate need for attention , you join threads , then say your leaving the thread, then back you bounce to add more . You were not taught of the two world wars in school, you are in your fifties so let's take 55, I asked you for your opinion on Donald Soper but you said he was before your time, he didn't die untill 1998 , a few weeks later you said you didn't agree with his views. How on earth can a Methodist in her fifties not attended a Donald Soper lecture held in Methodists churches throughout the country every year, you didn't know the name of your second in command because you forget names , you google bible passages and yes I know from which site, I suggest in christian love you find a different site.

I am sorry but this had to be said soon, you either need attention or you are enjoying winding posters up.

Lilygran Sun 13-Dec-15 17:58:35

Galen how do you do those other emoticons? Very impressive!

soontobe Sun 13-Dec-15 18:04:37

soon, get out of denial, it was the Met and the London Mayor who said Trump was wrong, not anyone here

There are up to 7 posters on there who say he is wrong.
Why are not posters reading properly? Perhaps they are tired.

DS. I agree with myself!

With repsect Anniebach, I am realising that you cannot remember much of what I write. And certainly not in correct detail. Fair enough, but if you can, have a search, so you can get it correct as I went through DS details before with you.

I have no idea which site you think I use regularly. I would be very interested to know myself!

Please please please granset, give us a decent search facility, so that all of us can check what we write. This is getting very silly!
Memories are far from accurate.
