And while we're on the subject does anyone remember liquorice wood ?

Yes, like bits of twig that you chewed and chewed and pretty soon the twigs looked like Rapunzel on a bad hair day.

The 'twigs' are actually the liquorice roots and still available to buy and will be available fresh next September from Robert Copley's farm shop in Pontefract. Google it for more info ( I have no connection to them at all but just thrilled that something that was lost is coming back 'home').
Plants are also available from a nursery at Wakefield.

You can buy them at health food shops. I used to love them when i was young - kept me happy for hours! I also liked the small thin hard sticks of salty liquorice. Supposed to be better for you than the soft chewy stuff.
