Aldi steals JL's thunder!

blackdog2 may mean me to get a life. Have never shopped at Aldi, the nearest shop to me takes a while to get to and passes many supermarkets on the way. I'm not a "small minded anti Aldi fan" blackdog I was just a little surprised after watching the Channel 4 programme.
Will admit to being a Sainsbury fan.

The only supermarket I don't shop in is Waitrose and that's because I think it's overpriced.
Not necessarily, especially if you look for bargains Wilma. It's not all pomegranate molasses
And I would cross the road from Asda, Lidl or Aldi to Waitrose to buy my milk.

The irony is they are building an Aldi right in front of my house on the next road. of course I will go in and have a look. I went in the new Lidl when it opened and bought a loaf of bread and a bottle of Prosecco - haven't been back.

rosequartz I don't want to have to look for bargains though and jing I don't want to be bothered with price matching. I just want to do my shopping and not feel that the prices are too high. I'm happy with the quality of food I buy from ASDA, Lidl or Tesco and don't need to buy the premium quality offered by Waitrose.

rq I don't understand the logic of crossing the road to buy milk in Waitrose instead the other shops? Is there a reason why you would do this?

I think rq's reason for preferring Waitrose's milk may be that they give a fairer deal to dairy farmers than Aldi, Lidl and Asda.

My OH bought a telescope from Lidl a while ago. He raves about it. It's made in Germany and very good quality. I have never looked through it so I can't corroborate! Love Aldi, Lidl and JL.

I have no idea where my nearest Waitrose is. I went in one on holiday once looking for a tin of something mundane (can't remember what) when I asked a member of staff the reply was " Oh, we don't stock that madam"
I left.

Just looked it up, it's 32 miles.

I can't believe the inverse snobbery about Waitrose.
Anywhere for us is a distance to travel - so we do the rounds of the supermarkets
I don't think I spend more or less in Waitrose than a normal weekly shop anywhere else.
We tend to spend more in Lidl because DH picks up all the stuff from the middle that isn't on the list .....

So tomorrow it will be Lidl en route to Waitrose and M&S

and the Lidl chocolate ..... yum

DH bought a bar of Lidl milk chocolate today while he was waiting for me to come from the hairdressers. We both agreed it was not a patch on Aldi's!

I don't shop in Waitrose for the very simple reason that our nearest one is the on the other side of the Tamar Bridge - any shopping trip there would cost an additional £1.50 toll charge

Thanks annodomini I did wonder if that was the case as I do follow what's happening in British farming. I won't start that discussion here.

rq it's not really inverse snobbery. We don't have a Waitrose near us either, it's almost 20 miles away. There's probably at least 3 of every other supermarket within 10 miles of us. Obviously it depends on what you buy, but our regular weekly shopping would definitely cost more at Waitrose (or M&S). We split our shopping most weeks between Lidl and Tesco, and when we need certain items we go to ASDA instead of Tesco (I am not too happy about shopping at Tesco tbh). We have a caravan and when we're away from home we shop around more. There's a Waitrose in Menai Bridge on Anglesey and we've shopped there a few times. We live a few miles from a motorway service station and nip on and off through the back entrance and sometimes stop at the Waitrose there for bread or milk!

DGS2 believes there are two sorts of supermarkets - Waitress and Not Waitrose.

Good for Aldi for taking a gentle pop at JL - no harm to either, I would think.
