Aldi steals JL's thunder!

The donations of toys & clothes have been pouring into our pop-up Children's Christmas Shop over the weekend. Among them was a big telescope. We have put it in the window - 'As advertised by John Lewis and Aldi'.

The ad made me chuckle and it was a good follow up to the more serious jl one. Perhaps it could give lonely people some hope of finding a close companion. I shop in both JL and Aldi and both are a pleasure to me in different ways. The JL shopping experience is obvious. Shopping in Aldi is refreshing....they dont move their stock around which means you can shop quickly because your not hunting for things, their food is inexpensive, their staff friendly and polite and you don't have to fumble in your bag for loyalty cards. Note; Aldi isn't paying me to say this!

I really enjoyed that song. it sounds just like my OH. I don't have a Lidl conveniently near but there are three Aldis in different directions all within about 6 miles.
Lots of lovely frozen german syle desserts.

I gave in and bought some of their "mini magnum" style ice creams as DGS's are coming.
I have to keep up with my co-granny, as DGS1 keeps hinting informing me that Grandma has mini magnums in her freezer.

Both Aldi and Lidl have a rich history of parodying other supermarket's adverts. When Lidl were opening a new branch in Cardiff quite close to a large Tesco, they (Lidl) erected a huge poster in front of the new building which was in Tesco colour and style and simply said "Every Lidl Helps". Priceless!

Aldi stuff is actually very good quality and I believe they pay their staff above minimum rate which is more than can be said for Sainsburys and Tesco .

In our house I'm me who's a sucker for the weekly offers and I am pretty sure that's why DH does the Lidl run.

When we go to our caravan in Wales, we usually buy treats from the local Aldi because it sells so many scrumptious things to tempt us, including a range of fruit cider - my favourite is a berry one. We rarely choose the same thing twice!

rq I can't help feeling Tesco is ripping me off so much of the time, yet I love Florence and Fred! Think I'm turning into a Grumpy Old Woman!

This is brilliant and I imagine JL love it. Most of my Christmas food shopping will be done in Aldi. I've already bought their luxury pudding and a frozen chocolate dessert. Toying with the £22.50 bottle of Amarone, perhaps it could be part of DH's present? They've got a wonderful range of chocolate in for Christmas and their panforte and the luxury panetonne are unbeatable. Our branch doesn't seem to have anyone chucking stuff around and the food doesn't get spoiled. They are also very good if you do want a refund for anything.

Both adverts are clever. John Lewis are on a win win, because people seeing the Aldi advert , will automatically remember the John Lewis one too x

DGS2 believes there are two sorts of supermarkets - Waitress and Not Waitrose.

Good for Aldi for taking a gentle pop at JL - no harm to either, I would think.

Thanks annodomini I did wonder if that was the case as I do follow what's happening in British farming. I won't start that discussion here.

rq it's not really inverse snobbery. We don't have a Waitrose near us either, it's almost 20 miles away. There's probably at least 3 of every other supermarket within 10 miles of us. Obviously it depends on what you buy, but our regular weekly shopping would definitely cost more at Waitrose (or M&S). We split our shopping most weeks between Lidl and Tesco, and when we need certain items we go to ASDA instead of Tesco (I am not too happy about shopping at Tesco tbh). We have a caravan and when we're away from home we shop around more. There's a Waitrose in Menai Bridge on Anglesey and we've shopped there a few times. We live a few miles from a motorway service station and nip on and off through the back entrance and sometimes stop at the Waitrose there for bread or milk!

I don't shop in Waitrose for the very simple reason that our nearest one is the on the other side of the Tamar Bridge - any shopping trip there would cost an additional £1.50 toll charge

DH bought a bar of Lidl milk chocolate today while he was waiting for me to come from the hairdressers. We both agreed it was not a patch on Aldi's!

I can't believe the inverse snobbery about Waitrose.
Anywhere for us is a distance to travel - so we do the rounds of the supermarkets
I don't think I spend more or less in Waitrose than a normal weekly shop anywhere else.
We tend to spend more in Lidl because DH picks up all the stuff from the middle that isn't on the list .....

So tomorrow it will be Lidl en route to Waitrose and M&S

Better outcome for the man on the moon, isn't it?!

My John Lewis contact's comment on the Aldi spoof was simply 'Genius'.
