As a child, did you fly?

I think there must be a universal human desire to fly. I don't actually remember flying as a child but I have dreamt of flying from an early age and always had a sense that it was possible. I recall the story of Icarus from school and it somehow confirmed that conviction.

I now tend to dream of either hovering/floating above the ground or jumping from a height and slowly floating down to earth. I have never flapped my arms as far as I remember.

I am sure I once read that it might stem from being thrown up in the air as babies. I know my Dad did that to my brothers and sisters and so probably did it to me too.

One of my real life dreams is to do a parachute jump which I guess is as close to flying as I am ever likely to get in reality.

I have vivid and clear memories of being able to fly as a chld- not down the stairs, but in open fields- running and flapping my arms and taking off softly. I wish I could still- wonderful.

I might have done once when I went in my bedroom and there was a blackbird in there. Got down the stairs really quickly, one way or another. Lifelong bird phobia.

We had a very steep narrow staircase in our terraced house, and as a child, on occasions, I would start out at the top and end up at the bottom but with no recollection of how I got there, like a sort of blackout experience but I obviously didn't fall, because I never hurt myself, just ended up sitting at the bottom of the stairs!

I remember jumping off the kitchen table a few times and flapping my arms madly, trying to fly - didn't work.

Yes! We had the same type of stairs and banister, and where it curved I could hold on and sort of float in a semi-circular fashion down three or four stairs without my feet touching - I didn't jump or leap.

It's so long ago now that I'm never sure whether that actually happened or not, as I have dreamed the same thing about steps and stairs often since.

I had dreams all the time as a child about flying down the stairs, it was lovely, but not in reality, just a dream.

My memories of this came from reading the 'dream' thread but I thought I'd better start a new one.

When I was a child between the ages of 6 and 8, we lived in a flat which was part of quite a grand old house. The house had been turned over to the council during the war and they converted it into three flats, two on the ground floor and ours on the first floor. In order to get from our flat to the front door we had to go down a beautiful old staircase of dark polished wood. The wide, shallow stairs were covered at this time in a sort of rubber floor covering, and there was a heavy and ornate bannister in the same dark shiny wood as the stairs. I remember distinctly that sometimes (not always) when I descended the stairs I felt I was actually flying, hand still resting (not clinging) to the bannister and my feet six inches or so above the stairs. Did anyone else have this type of experience as a child? It only happened to me on the stairs, not anywhere else, and it's only in recent years that I've realised it was rather weird.
