Very longggggggggggggggg threads

Bags do you have a view on whether if a person constantly 'misinterprets' one's posts they are deliberately being annoying? No, not you!

There's a difference between being annoying and being annoyed. It is very rare to read a post where someone seems to have been trying to be annoying; less rare to see posts where the poster seems to be annoyed about someone else's post.

Way of the world.

Not at all - she did say that funny/amusing threads are different!

If you carry on like this, you'll be annoying Nonnie again with another long thread!

How's your bike riding going?

Talking of bikes, DD2’s monocycle is still in our shed. With a flat tyre.

Hacking, of a sort, with a hedge cutter, jings. No slaying unless you count carving an already dead and cooked chicken.

You must read the threads though, Tegan, you seem to be always ready and willing to disagree with my posts on certain of them!

that's a facetious grin btw

No I won't jingle. And it's comments like that that make me pretty much avoid gransnet these days.#lifestooshort

Go on then Tegan. Tell us what threads you mean. Seeing as they make you so !!!!

Hiya Bags. You been doing any hacking and slaying?

Hello Ana. What you having for tea tonight?

I usally reckon that by the time a thread has had 30+ responses all that can be said on the topic has probably been said and posters are just saying the same thing in different words.

That 'you' include me, btw. I'm useless at cryptic stuff.

Why shouldn't gransnetters who have got to know each other have chats on the forum? So long as they are not abusing someone else, surely that is within the forum guidelines?

And as for cryptic, what happened to ignoring stuff you don't understand, shrugging it off, thinking "wonder what she's on about? oh well what the heck?"

Eloethan - with you about the facetious cryptic little posts which sometimes deteriorate into a private chat. Not worth scrolling through, like some teens' texts. Boards for everyone, not just some self selected in group!!
Gransnet is great as distraction when unwell or sleepless. Long may it flourish!!

Sometimes it seems the odd facetious comment is seen as an affront to the earnest nature of whatever thread it's been posted on, possibly in an attempt to lighten the mood.

I think it's rather worrying that some people believe they know what motivates others and can't wait to snap their heads off...

Just like to make the point that when I do have 'something better to do' I do it!

As for facetiousness... It's allowed. Free speech and all that.

I can too, well, I can't remember which threads, but I remember it happening; I've probably taken part in such myself. However, if and when I have done that it has been because the thread was getting nasty and the so-called derailment has been a deliberate attempt to get things back onto a more equable footing, either discussing something else or going back to the original theme without the bitchiness.

I don't flatter myself I've ever derailed redirected a thread all by myself but I have consciously taken part in trying to calm things down at times.

And I am not ashamed of so doing.

Oh I can ....

Eloethan I take your point about the difference between "off topic" and deliberate"de-railing" though I can't think of any threads where I was aware of "de-railing"

I don't mind at all how long threads are - as others have said, if I'm fed up with them I just look at something else.

My view of what "de-railing" a thread means is not people disagreeing with what I or others think but people chipping in with short facetious and completely unrelated comments that interrupt the flow of the discussion and which appear to be designed to do so. By that, I don't mean going "off topic" - that is inevitable and often takes the topic in a new and interesting direction.

I also find it funny when people say they have "better things to do" - I often wonder why they're not doing them.

Pittcity and a hesitation one?
