What's your favourite sandwich for lunch? When you are on your own, and can sit down , read a magazine, a chapter of your book, or visit Gransnet.
Mine is a warm - hard boiled egg, with shredded lettuce and salad cream, on buttered bread. I have just made it, and a great big mug of frothy coffee, heaven on a pretty tray.

My favourite has to be brie and grape, which I only indulge in occasionally (it's what keeps it special!). Standard 'fridge staples' fillings are the classic hard boiled egg with lettuce, cucumber and a little mayo, or cheese with home made courgette chutney.
Another good'un is one my DD found in a magazine yonks ago and it's definitely one of her favourites: corned beef, salad cream and plain crisps all mashed up together. Go on, try it, it's great! Oh, and cheddar cheese with Ritz biscuits is quite good grin

All time favourite has to be toasted ham and cheese.

Recent fancy I had for brunch in a local café and have re-created at home:

toasted sough-dough, topped with mustard, mashed avocado and a sprinkling of chilli, small-diced feta, chopped black olives & lemon juice.

Looks and tastes really fab!

Aren't you too hungry to faff around with all that before you get to eat your lunch? confused

It takes about 2 minutes!

As DGD(6) said to me

"Grandma, you have to be patient" - when I was muttering and cursing when having trouble with a lock.

indiana the corned beef one sounds lovely. I must try it

Bellanonna Fri 18-Sept-15 18:34:55

indinana. - sorry !

Bellanonna Fri 18-Sept-15 18:35:59

Is that salad cream, or Hellmans ?

feetlebaum Fri 18-Sept-15 18:52:50

Ham and Coleslaw on Wholemeal is good. Tuna, chopped red onion, (or chopped spring onion), mayo, Cayenne Pepper - that's pretty good too.

Auntieflo Fri 18-Sept-15 19:27:31

It has to be salad cream.

rosesarered Fri 18-Sept-15 19:35:25

I hate salad cream, last had some about 50 years ago.
so many yummy sarnies, I can't choose really but..... Hmmmn, chicken and sald with mayo and black pepper may be the winner, followed by cheese and chutney.

My favorite sandwich is, and always has been, stotty cake (flat bread), home cooked ham, and home made pease pudding.

rosesarered Fri 18-Sept-15 20:23:02

A sarnie version of pea and ham soup Newist?smile

newist Fri 18-Sept-15 20:28:07

Sort of only the pease pud, is made from yellow split peas.

MiniMouse Fri 18-Sept-15 20:35:41

No prizes for guessing where you sampled that delicacy Newist grin My OH always brings a load home from there to stock up the freezer!!

newist Fri 18-Sept-15 20:58:58

Yes my Nana and my Mam used to cook it for us as children, now I continue the tradition

Indinana Fri 18-Sept-15 22:02:36

Bellanonna I would always go for Hellmans myself, but my DD insists the authentic recipe is salad cream and she won't let me have it any other way. Mind you, when she's not here.... wink

Pittcity Fri 18-Sept-15 22:31:27

A salad cream sandwich is one of my favourites. Has to be white sliced bread.

Matella Fri 18-Sept-15 23:05:55

simple corned beef and mustard for me but how do you make pease pudding Newist? confused

feetlebaum Fri 18-Sept-15 23:21:07

Pease pudding - there's a memory of school lunches in the 1940s! Just think - a little more effort and they could have invented dal...

FarNorth Fri 18-Sept-15 23:26:47

Wholemeal bread with Marmite, tahini and tomato.

Greyduster Fri 18-Sept-15 23:35:05

Smoked streaky bacon, lettuce and tomato with Hellmanns mayonnaise on a pannini, or peanut butter and banana on Sainsburys multigrain bread.

shysal Sat 19-Sept-15 09:15:55

I recently tried Lidl mayonnaise, and find I prefer it to Hellmans, and it is much cheaper. I buy the Lighter than Light version and use it for coleslaw so that I can be generous without too many calories. I now have 3 jars in my cupboard to keep me going!blush

AuntieFlo, you have obviously discovered that starting a food-related thread goes down well on GN!

Someone I knew many years ago used to like cold mashed potato sandwiches confused

thatbags Sat 19-Sept-15 09:31:44

At the moment it's the crust/heal of a loaf (no-one else eats them in oor hoos) spread with unsalted butter, then chocolate-hazelnut spread, and sliced banana on top of that. Mug of tea on the side.

A good deal of the time what I eat depends on what needs using up.
