What is the most romantic thing that has happened to you?

After 41 years of marriage, it's what is not said and specifically done in a romantic manner, that I value. Constancy, patience, humour and kindness wins out - just the day-to-dayness of the how.

My DH would often etch " I love you " on my frosty windscreen, or in condensation on a window. The last time was about 10 years ago and he seems to have lost the habit. He never buys me flowers, I buy my own. But on a country walk he would often pick a wild flower and present it to me with a kiss ( botanists, don't worry, they were common flowers) and always kissed me at a kissing gate. Knackered knees = no more lovely walks. I do miss them.

I remember reading in the Sunday Post of all papers many many years ago about a man planting snowdrops to form the words " I love you " knowing that when they came up he would no longer be there . Brings a tear to the eye.

When I first met my second husband my house was in turmoil due to builders, amongst other things I had no boiler, as the idiots had decided I didn't need one as I had an electric shower. I had being saying out loud how much I was looking forward to enjoying relaxing in a hot bath. On his next visit, he disappeared upstairs for ages. He eventually came down to tell me my bath was ready. He had filled it with a bucket from the shower! It was heaven. He also kisses me every time the lift door closes when we're out, if there's someone else in the lift he just winks at me!

DH is not romantic but the most romantic couple I ever met were having affairs and eventually got divorced!

My only blind date proposed to me 12 days later and now we are heading towards 48 years married.

Does organising a trip in Italy returning on the Orient Express count? I did have to hint rather a lot first.

My husband wasn't generally a romantic soul. If I came back with a new hairdo, he would say, "Were they closed?" He bought me flowers occasionally, telling me that they were reduced, and if I asked him if my new dress suited me, he would say, "I suppose it's alright". But this hid a romantic side that did surface every now and then. On one occasion, he rode fifteen miles on his motorbike to where I worked, just to give me one red rose, with a vase to put it in, on my birthday. It was such a surprise. Of course, he couldn't let me believe that he was really such a "softie", so he had to tell me that he found the vase in a charity shop! Bless him.

My late husband was not romantic at all - but my fondest memories of him are from when we lived in Holyhead. He was a Customs Officer at the port and could see me walking into town from their office. I often came out of the local supermarket to find him sat on the bench outside grinning at me. Miss him very much.

My husband was in US on my 40th birthday and rang our local bank in England asking them to go to the florist next door to them and order abig bouquet to be delivered to me. That was 30 years ago, can you imagine a bank doing that today, supposing there was still a local branch anyway!

What lovely stories! My DH is not very romantic. You know when there is a point in a new romance when it has to go one way or the other? Well, he took me out for a lovely dinner after about a year of a long distance relationship and I had a feeling that something might happen. All evening I waited on tenterhooks -nothing! The next morning he was frying mushrooms and I was making the breakfast pot of tea and he proposed! I nearly scalded us both with the kettle. He does like to surprise me to this day and we've celebrated 43 years of marriage -not bad going.

A few years ago we were on holiday in Tenerife and Ibsaw a gorgeous Pandora bangle in a jewellers window; we went in , asked the price and I said 'no, it was more than we could afford' and thought no more of it.
When on holiday my husband always takes himself off for a days walking, and, when he came home later that day he said that he'd passed the jewellers and went in to buy the bangle. Unfortunately, he said, it had been sold. I was so touched that he'd tried. That evening when we were getting ready to go for dinner I opened the safe to get my jewellery wrap and there was a beautifully wrapped box containing the bangle! He's not often given to romantic gestures but this was one of the best! But then, so is he.

DH isn't given to romantic gestures but for our ruby anniversary he helped design a diamond ring for me.

A beautiful Victorian silver Mispah (watchtower) brooch of linked hearts with the words 'May the Lord Watch between Thee and Me When We are Absent One From Another.' I wonder who the original recipient was and hope her romance fared better than ours.

Being flown to Paris for dinner seemed romantic at the time but now, so much older, it strikes me as showing off and rather second rate. What I think was probably romantic was the person who anonymously sent me 24 red roses on St Valentine's Day for several years. I never had the slightest idea who he was.

A rather domineering MIL when we were very young and getting engaged said we ought to go to a family connection for an engagement ring. I found out later that she had specified that we were to be shown a certain sort of size and quality of diamond. I had wished for an antique oval diamond . Twenty five years later DH proposed again with a beautiful oval diamond ring.

That is lovely, *stansgran'. I had exactly the same problem first time round. I solved it myself, though. I saved up my money and went to a jewellery designer friend, and had my ring made for me. I wanted white gold, a very wide band with a flat top, with a central raised cabochon amethyst and a diamond on either side, also raised. He said I should have been a jewellery designer, but it wasn't so, I just knew what I wanted. That marriage ended, so DD now has it, much as I loved it, it brought back too many memories.

So many enviable stories!
When I was in my late teens, I craved "romance" and met a young man who was incorrigeable. I would be showered wiht letters, poems, cards, flowers... It was exhausting! He wasn't even dump-able!
DH is certainly not given to romantic gestures, he even suggested that my mother would be happy if we married where i came from instead of a proposal! but love, constancy and a fierce loylaty do me after nearly 42 years together.

My husband was a Police Officer and subsequently worked shifts. When our work patterns didn't coincide he would leave little love notes all around the house where he knew I would go like in the fridge, tea caddy, under my pillow etc. it got a bit embarrassing though when the kids found them first! He is still romantic there is never a day goes by without him telling me he loves me and that is after 33 years of marriage. I got a good one

When I was 14 I received a letter from a boy at school, saying he liked me.

He signed it with his christian name and then added his surname in brackets just in case I didn't recognise his christian name.

In those days at co-ed schools the boys were always known by their surnames.

Nothing ever came of the letter - I can't remember why.
