it is still sometimes hard work to stick to it... but those basic rules (after a lifetime of faddy/ calorie controlled etc diets) seems to be doing the trick!

Hi JG yes, I'm back! Landed at Birmingham dead on 7.00pm after a bit of a hairy flight in one of those island hopper planes. I did so much crave a drink tonight when I saw DH pour himself a whisky, but I was strong.

I've loved Jersey. I got into my hire car this morning for a drive around the island, and took the A9 from St Helier on the south coast up north. Within 10 minutes I'd reach the north coast. The island is only 5 miles x 9 miles!

No political parties either and they don't vote in UK election, and quaintest of all the still have £1 notes. Nice to be back though, that was long enough for me. Next it's the Scilly Isles, any takers on here?

Birmingham? Anya Not too far from me then DH and I keep saying we will go to Jersey for a few days - you've re-kindled my interest reading about your adventures!

Good for you on finding the strength to resist the temptation of a drink - but hey we're heading for our third dry weekend - I do think it's getting easier - what about you?

I'm on [ brew] tonight. One thing about hotel rooms - nothing tastes good with that horrible UHT milk, so have missed a decent cuppa.

A 6-year old prima donna will certainly keep you on the go!!

Of course we can, no doubt in my mind now - I would be gutted if I/we don't make it - onwards and upwards!

Yesterday I had four GC here from school pick up until mothers arrived at 4.30 and 5.10 to collect them. Both DiL and DD stayed to chat for too long a bit, so it was almost six by the time I'd got rid they'd all gone.

That's when I'd normally collapse on the sofa and reach for a glass of red.

Today, the same. I love having the GC because they all quarrel and argue keep each other occupied, but parents hanging about can be quite wearing.

And has anyone else noticed the GC's behaviour worsens as soon as mummy appears?

Absolutely Anya about the GC's behaviour. I remember one occasion when my GS, who was about 4 at the time, was very rude to my SIL when he came in from work. I opened my mouth to tell my GS off but changed my mind as I was no longer in charge! I did tell my DD and she said I should have spoken up.

As far as the dryathon is concerned, I have tried but have fallen by the wayside a few times.

Four GC Anya - I only have two!! But yes, the behaviour definitely changes when parents are on the scene and I usually stand there looking helpless - constantly repeating "but she's been so good all day/since school" etc... and then I remember that it was just the same when mine were young and staying with GP's ... LOL

Tonight is the first night that I actually haven't thought about having a drink and it's only as I'm typing this that I've realised it - that's progress

I had my fortnightly piano pupil tonight at 7.00 pm and realised when I booked her next lesson it will be the last day of September so only two weeks to go JG

Yes Anya, unfortunate phrase. I'll pick myself up out of the gutter and try harder! The next few days will definitely be dry as we have the GC for three days while their parents have a break.

I was just about to say the same thing to Liz46 To be honest I'm pretty damn close this morning .... but have decided to go for a run instead just to clear my head of family-related dramas! Then I'm heading to meet a lovely friend for a gluten-free and alcohol/free lunch!

Me neither . I think the problem with alcohol is that it encourages poor food choices - I am definitely less inclined to snack after dinner.

To be fair there has been no alcohol drunk here since Sunday when DH had a small glass of . DS is here for the weekend and does enjoy a glass of red with his Friday night steak - I'm happy with my shloer mixed with sparkling water.

Interesting - a Shloër Spritzer? Might try that.

Since the beginning of the month. I have had about 6 x 50ml sherry glasses of Damson gin and one glass of Peroni when out of a meal.

That's a lot to drink at one meal Nelllie

Did you give the Shloer spritzer a go Anya - I find the red grape one works best but then I do prefer red wine in my 'other' life

Wine was around tonight but I wasn't bothered and DH/DS don't try to tempt me with it - they're still reeling with shock very supportive

Not managed to try it yet JG - my two GDs (4&5) are staying overnight so all I could think of what what to cook for tea (cauliflower cheese) and what to get in for breakfast. Made do with slimline tonic with a slice of lemon. It's a pity you can't get alcohol free gin essence - just a couple of drops would have done the trick.

I think I've identified a gap in the market here. Any entrepreneurs out there?

Good to know you've got support in the family JG - no one seems to have noticed in mine, or oerhaps they're afraid to ask in case I've fallen into Gill's wayside too.

You may be on to something with your a/f gin essence - but if its anything like a/f wine then I'll stick to my schloer spritzer
