My D is proving to be very resourceful at a difficult time in her life and after dropping out of university went back at the age of 44 and got her degree so perhaps she is well named.

The Judith who cut off Holofernes head was brave and resourceful and brighter than him. He thought only of conquest, drink and sex, She planned to outwit him and succeeded, and changed the course of the war. A girl with spirit would be proud to share the name.

Two paintings of the same scene - Caravaggio painted a girl in a clean white dress who looks as though she has come across a dead mouse in the bread, cutting at arms length and hardly putting any pressure on the sword. That would never kill a general.

Artemisia Gentileschi (who had experienced rape and humiliation) depicts a strong woman exerting all her strength to get the sword through the bones of sinews of a brutal man's neck. See the determination on her face. Her maid is being a lot more help than the one on Caravaggio's painting, too.

I've cheated and Googled it - there are seven Joshua, Judges, Jeremiah, Joel, Judith, Joel, Job, Jonah - but Judith isn't in the Protestant Bible (and why not? Sexism! Though Esther managed to get in there, good on yer, Esther)

Judith was a beautiful Hebrew widow, in a town called Bethulia, which was under seige by Holofernes, a General of Nebuchadnezzar. Holofernes's advance stopped the water supply and the town almost surrendered. The people lost heart and encouraged their rulers to give way and the leaders vowed to surrender if no help arrived within five days

Judith entered Holofernes's camp at night accompanied only by her maid, went to Holofernes tent and sweet-talked him, plying him with food and drink and promises until he fell into a drunken sleep. Then she beheaded him and returned to Bethulia with the severed head. The Hebrews took heart and defeated the leaderless enemy.

A resourceful woman. She deserves to be better remembered.

We've booked a break to Newquay next week, as we're not needed for DGS-minding, so I shall be yomping along the beach, come Hell, high water, wind and rain. On the days when we're not trapped on the coach for hours on end, of course
