Oh so where do these other migrants come from?

Certain agencies estimate that 1 in 5 is not a Syrian. Many of the migrants are swotting up on Syrian facts ( on their smart phones) while on their trek north. They have been told that they will be asked questions appertaining to Syria.
Or, if you have the money(about ??1,500) you can buy a bonified Syrian passport. These passports were stolen by isis from government buildings when they took over the towns. They then sold them onto people traffickers.

Surely Margaret is allowed to post about her own personal experience without having to qualify this in any way?

It's obvious that not all the migrants will be granted refugee status and the media has made it clear most are from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The images we see don't always match the accompanying text though. But how many bother to read all the blurb when they can just look at the pictures?

I often wonder what I would do if I had my 2 children and my country descended into hell with bombs and chemical weapons. I would certainly run with them, as nothing is so precious as their lives. I would then once I had escaped that hell try to get them to a country where they stood a chance of a better life. Sod my status!!

I read earlier this week that people fleeing Syria, or other war zones and refugees in the first country they arrive in. If they then move on, they become economic migrants. Syrians prefer to move on from Greece or Turkey (for example) to northern europe because they have better opportunities to find work.

I genuinely don't know if this is accurate or whether it's the kind of twisting of reality that is so often used by countries who want to prevent an 'influx' of asylum seekers.

Of course those who are fleeing war should have refugee status, whitewave, I was referring to the questions raised in the media about whether they are all in fact fleeing from war and/or persecution.

Generally speaking, I think they are all known as migrants, then can seek asylum under the 1951 Refugee Convention on the Status of Refugees upon reaching a safe haven; an asylum seeker whose application has been successful is known as a refugee.

It matters hugely to them though. I thought that the UN said they must have refugee status, as they are fleeing war?

Well, that seems to be a debateable question...

MargaretX conveniently forgot to mention the anti immigration rallies in East Germany. Or people living in the border towns (with Austria) who's lives are being disrupted by the constant flo through their towns, and can't speak out because they are called Natzi's. These are not my words, this is what I'm reading.
Not all Germans are in favour of this mass immigration, other people have a right to voice their opinions.

Funny really, POGS, as other people have also picked up on things she has said, but not copied them in their reply posts.

Perhaps she doesn't realise that this is how GN can work (or at least I thought that was how it was supposed to work), as otherwise it gets confusing who or what you are replying to.

It was heartening to read about the refugees in her post, but I don't suppose she will read mine to know how I feel.

As I've been helping the refugees for some considerable time (years in fact) I am pleased to hear that more people are taking notice at last.

Are offering. Many in the UK feel the same and are ashamed at this government s stance.

We have according to government figures spent £1bn in the refugee camps obviously a complete waste of money as there is little food or water and complete lack of services, and yet we continue to plug the idea that keeping them in the camps is the best thing for them, ask any refugee what he/she thinks - well we know as they are saying it with their feet.

What we are doing or not doing is utterly shameful and I weep for those tinies looking so bewildered and frightened. I wonder what history will have to say about it?

I was speaking to friends in Bulgaria about this quota system for the migrants. They are beyond angry. It's really not fair to send these people to these ex communist countries, the will be treated badly. The Bulgarians were invaded by the Turks (many years ago) they hate anything associated with Muslims. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it's a fact.
