I think his suggestion is going back to the 50s (and yes I remember the old style train carriages when I was a child)

What next? Women should stay home in the kitchen and not move out of the house except with their husbands? Burkhas to protect us from men ogling?

For what it's worth imo it is wrong to segregate women as Corbyn suggests. Men should be behaving better and THAT is what he should be encouraging.

Whatever happened to the communication cord? Not a good idea to have it apply the brakes immediately (!!) but it would alert a guard to trouble in a particular carriage, and he could go and see what was up.

Are there still communication cords? I don't remember seeing one.

Agreed, roses. Having women only carriages could be seen as a way of copping out of that policing responsibility. In my opinion, money would be better spent on that.

Even if it was a lone guard, and the idea was never totally enforced[cant see how it could be], it is scary to be a women travelling alone at night.

The downside that I can see, is it becomes worse for those men who are not out to cause trouble[which is the majority] who are left with a carriage full of men who might want to cause trouble.

No political party/MP's are exempt from stupid ideas though.if there are increasing numbers of attacks on women then late night carriages need railway police, if they still exist, to patrol the carriages.

The enforcement I mean is keeping males out of the women only carriages. I don't think sexual predators and violent thugs would be stopped by a notice on a carriage door, or however it was marked.

What about conductors going through? They'd have to lock doors at both ends all the time.

What about women wanting to go to buffet cars, etc etc.

Good point, ab, at 0940, so long as the choice is real and women are not 'encouraged' to use the women only carriage when they'd rather not.

And the enforcement problem remains: who would pay for it?

A women only carriage would not be segregation,it would be a choice , there is no choice in segregation . Also it is relating to late night travel because of the increasing number of attacks on women .

Segregation never helps make people more civilised. I agree that it's incompatible with the freedom we are used to. If loutish behaviour on trains can't be controlled than neither can this kind of attempt to forestall loutish behaviour.

I sincerely hope train carriage segregation does not happen.

I think the ideas raised are interesting, and at this stage that is all they are - ideas. JC is talking about consultation about how to reduce the increasing numbers of sex attacks against women on public transport. A valid topic for consultation I would have thought.

No. The implications of the idea are worrying. That does not imply that talking about such things is stupid, nor that the people doing the talking are stupid.

The idea of women only carriages, while it may have attractions at times, is also worrying. My worry would be that it would be used to justify gender segregation in other places, such as that ridiculous time at a lecture at LSE, and of that I could not approve.

I also don't think the idea of pulling out of NATO is fully thought through.

This is one of those rare threads where I start off with one opinion, nad after posts are made, I change my mind.

If it has been done before, my guess is that it worked.

I cant see it getting policed properly, and probably it shouldnt as the cost would be huge, but like there are quiet carriages, there could be ladies only ones.

I dont particularly like the idea, but I can see that at certain times, perhaps later at night , and footbal matches etc, they would have their place.

I also dont like the idea of segregation at all, but can see that occasionally choosing it may be useful.

Well, thinking about it, it is something from history!

I remember the ladies only carriages in the past, they were so women didn't have to hear a swear word or put up with pipe smoke etc.ditto the ladies only waiting rooms ( with comfy sofas and a fire going in the hearth!) seeems like something from history.
