Until being made redundant from a job I loved, I had had 2 employments that between the 2 of them covered 17 years, so you could say that I'm a "stayer".

The wilderness years after the redundancy from Mystery Shoppers in May 2012 have been difficult, in those three years I have probably had in excess of 12 jobs. In some cases I walked away, in others my services were dispensed with

It knocks your confidence pretty hard, and there have been times when trying to "put myself back together" was daunting to say the least, not helped by the fact that I am still being treated for anxiety and depression.

However, here I am at the end of week 1 (I currently do just three days a week) and apart from speaking to you lovely people on line, I am also looking on line in my own time for ideas that may help the business.

The Boss keeps copying me on various things, with the added comment "you can take this over next month" so although nothing in life is a certainty, apart of course than death and taxes, it is looking quite good for being kept on!

He said that long term (get that, "LONG TERM" !) he would like me to take over the PAYE stuff, VAT returns etc. I haven't had the heart to tell him that numbers are really not my thing, and I have to take my shoes and socks off for any number over ten, but hey, never too old to learn new skills!

Now the soppy bit, the help (some with stuff like checking and re-vamping my CV, you know who you are!) has been invaluable, as is the support given during the ups and downs of it all, you must have got completely fed up with doing it again after every job change!

I so appreciate knowing that there are people out there, (some of whom I have never met] who have sent messages of support, you are a damn good lot, thank you all.

OK, soppy bit over, I will be back to inane ramblings/ observations about daft things that husbands & cats do.

I too only found this news this morning - that is really good news phoenix I hope this one proves to be as good as you hope. It has been an incredibly hard time the last few years for people who for no fault of their own have been looking for a new job -DD has been in the same sort of boat but not had so many false starts but quite a few plus a big op etc. she has a job now with proper money and that she loves BUT she has had to move 250 miles away - 5 hour train journey or abou 3-4 by car. She is not finding it easy as misses her DC -both young adults and in jobs they cannot just up and leave. Long may the jobs continue!

I think I might be ok, he is giving me passwords etc to access the bank accounts!

I was also copied in on an email between him and his accountant. Part of it from him to her read " I think this will work out well, she is a detail person and seems quite bright" !

It is such a lovely working environment, could not be more different from the last one.

Also on the plus side, he seems to be almost as absent minded/forgetful as me! We find ourselves saying to each other "Hang on a sec, I must write that down !" I can imagine that he might be a bit prickly from time to time, but can't we all?

He now has me booking doctors appointments, getting quotes from local tradespeople to organise plumbing in a washing machine for the students in the shower block, making arrangements to have the new workshop kitten/cat neutered etc etc. This has resulted in a new job title, not that I'm bothered much about what I'm called, as long as I'm treated well and paid, that'll do me!

Oh well done! I'm so pleased for you, I fear I gave up in the end. I admire your staying power, and it does sound like a lovely job that will give you scope to make it as you want it to be.

Only just read this thread, phoenix. Congratulations - I'm chuffed to bits for you. Sounds like he knows he's struck a rich gold vein, too, in giving you your job.

If you really like the job and the people phoenix I guess there's a pretty good chance they feel the same about you. I do hope so - as others have said, you deserve it for staying positive despite some knockbacks.
