Are you a natural "joiner"?

I do find myself envying people who seem to find a congenial group wherever they go, who launch themselves wholeheartedly into their local church/WI/book club or whatever. I am extrovert on the surface, but very reserved deep down, a reserve some people take as stand-offishness.
My mother being German in a small town in Scotland not long after the war never found it easy to fit in, while my father was universally popular but held back from many social occasions maybe because he sensed animosity to Mum and just wasn't prepared to bother with people like that.
Perhaps we should never have moved to a village but stayed in the city where these things matter less as I can say I have honestly tried and still find it a struggle. I was involved with charities in London, but never felt brave enough to try to get involved here; of course I joined the PTA, but again always felt a newbie, got involved at our church ( until it went all happy clappy and I couldn't quite get on with that!), I am Treasurer of our local women's group and belong to a book club, but I often feel I have to force myself to make the effort to join in the chitchat and find it hard to be 100% involved. If I am honest I feel like an observer or an outsider, even finding it hard to join in some of the jolly banter at our GN virtual parties!!
Should I just give over thinking about it? Just take the plunge? Or is it silly to try to be something I am not?

pompa Mon 08-Jun-15 17:23:30

I did have to guess what 'pragmatic' means. Never have got my head round that word.

Bellanonna Mon 08-Jun-15 17:12:19

I came out as mediator too!

Ana Mon 08-Jun-15 16:59:43

Mediators are supposed to make up only 4% of the population - what a coincidence that there are at least two of us on GN already...grin

Lona Mon 08-Jun-15 16:59:11

jings you do tend to come on in someone's defence quite often.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:58:23

I've got a sword.

Ana Mon 08-Jun-15 16:58:06

The Mediator sounds wonderful!

Unfortunately, I don't recognise much of myself in the description although I answered the questions as honestly as I could (brutally, in some cases!).

Lona Mon 08-Jun-15 16:57:46

I haven't read it all but it's mostly trueish so far. I can recognise a lot of traits.

Yes, I quite like it.

numberplease Mon 08-Jun-15 16:57:18

Well, I`m (supposedly) The Mediator, whatever it means.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:56:06

Well - perhaps if I knew what it was supposed to mean. "A Defender". Defending what? ( I couldn't understand the breakdown part, with the percentages)

Gracesgran Mon 08-Jun-15 16:53:42

Do you all like what you are? Would you be happy with someone thinking of you as that person?

Lona Mon 08-Jun-15 16:51:26

Blimey!! I'm scary!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:50:05

I can't even say that!

Lona Mon 08-Jun-15 16:48:46

Just done it and I'm a Logistician!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:43:20

grin

Ana Mon 08-Jun-15 16:41:50

Are you sure you two wouldn't like me to do some Mediating? grin

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:38:04

#miserableoldbuggerme

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:37:39

Good. grin

Lona Mon 08-Jun-15 16:36:42

jings I am quite cheerful about it grin

Ana Mon 08-Jun-15 16:35:30

I'm The Mediator...hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 16:30:10

I did. I'm a defender. [shrug] [wtf]

Not up to defending anything at the mo.

Stansgran Mon 08-Jun-15 16:26:57

Go on jingle bells have a go. I bet you come out with a startling resultgrin

Gracesgran Mon 08-Jun-15 16:20:48

Just done it Stansgran and the one good thing is I am very rare ... or is it? I am "The Advocate” (INFJ-T)"
