The Big Toast Challenge

(73 Posts)
jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 10:08:17

Can you do it?

Place bread in toaster, switch on, stand with face slightly over toast to watch progress. And then - the hard bit - DO NOT JUMP OUT OF YOUR SKIN WHEN IT POPS UP AT YOU.

This Challenge is harder than it sounds. Safety requirements should be adhered to at all times. ie, do not set hair/scarf/eyebrows, etc on fire. The innovator of this Challenge accepts no responsibility for anything at all.

I am not keen on marmalade, so it has to be home-made jam!
Peanut butter anyone?

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 19:23:50

Oh, happy memories.
MIL negotiating the toaster, popping it up to see how it's doing, putting it back down again, the smell of burning throughout the house, the DC shouting 'Grandma, your toast is ready!' and MIL chuntering about my 'rubbish toaster'.

AshTree Sun 10-May-15 19:20:27

Definitely not marmite (yuk!). Homemade whisky marmalade, honey, or just plain, unsalted butter. And I agree, loopy, never jam!

loopylou Sun 10-May-15 17:13:52

Crikey! Just stand the toaster on a tray and put the crumbs out for the birds smile

Marmite (no butter) on toast, or homemade marmalade, delicious grin, never jam.
DH hates toast per se .....unless smothered in baked beans or as a fried egg sandwich.

I shall have to make more joke if I get such good advice (mind you some of the advice I have had after my jokes has been physically impossible grin)
Hand Held Vac, Mrs P follows me around with one, especially when I have been wood-turning.

Pittcity Sun 10-May-15 16:59:23

I like Marmite on my toast, jam is reserved for scones. What's your favourite?

Ana Sun 10-May-15 16:46:19

Exactly, rose! I have one in my kitchen for that very purpose.

rosequartz Sun 10-May-15 16:44:26

Just buy a handheld vacuum cleaner! Simples!

rosesarered Sun 10-May-15 16:41:18

Falconbird you can't make toast without a few crumbs, hard to understand your DIL's viewpoint on this. deny children toast?Mind you, My Grandmother who was lovely but a bit OCD about cleaning refused to have bread in the kitchen that needed to be sliced for that same reason! so she only ever bought sliced bread.

You can't come on here and make jokes without getting some bossy suggestions advice in return you know. wink

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 14:11:03

I'd go to the pub for that one.

pompa Sun 10-May-15 14:07:45

One of the reviewers uses it for brie + cranberry

pompa Sun 10-May-15 14:05:19

There, I though I was joking, what a good idea, will be near Lakeland later in the week.

Ana Sun 10-May-15 14:04:42

Welsh rarebit isn't a sandwich, though. The cheese would stick to the bag.

pompa Sun 10-May-15 14:03:20

The ash add a bitter edge that compliments the marmalade.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 14:02:45

pompa you need some of these

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 14:00:23

Yes. And if it falls off the fork and into the fire you just bravely fish it out and still eat it.

Used to have a four slice toaster that did every thing. Tried Welsh rarebit, never been the same since.
Toast that has been burnt, scrapped, burnt and scraped again is the best.

AshTree Sun 10-May-15 13:54:00

Personally, I have to say the best toast on the planet is done on the end of a toasting fork over an open fire. Especially after catching on fire and being blown out several times. I've tried it on my 'open' fake coal gas fire - not the same sad.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 13:03:40

pompa. grin

ninathenana Sun 10-May-15 13:00:01

Mine is far from crap, it's a four slicer with two separate controls so DH and I can cook toast just how we like it simultaneously, and it's never thrown the toast at me, so there !!! grin

Ana Sun 10-May-15 12:54:50

jingl, mine's a Russell Hobbs very similar to yours, but it doesn't toast evenly, I have to turn the bread round halfway through...sad

pompa Sun 10-May-15 12:49:34

JBF, keep your comments about our toasters to your self, it was very spiteful, my grill is now sulking. Any more of that and we will all aim our toasters in your direction and you will be buried under amazing toast. Hope you have plenty of butter and marmalade ready.grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 12:35:53

Good pop. NOT a "Google" one. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-May-15 12:35:00

Why have you all got crap toasters - or even none at all!? (*pomps*) hmm Look. Like mine. twenty quid, lovely toast and a Google pop (without chucking toast halfway round kitchen)!

And you can enjoy simple pleasures, such as this one.
