May was on R4 this morning talking about British values, and enshrining them into law, but when she was challenged by JH she couldn't list any apart from decency and other such woollie things - it hardly constitutes law though. Personally I think there is plenty of laws that cover what she is trying to do and is making a bit of a song and dance about it.

I heard something similar on the radio today, whitewave, i.e. that we already have the laws, it's just that there seems to be a lack of will to implement them properly. (But shouldn't this be on the Human Rights thread?)

Same as Lilygran's. They are going to change the laws. Didn't tell us that in the manifesto that lots of people voted for.

The only thing ridiculous / strange / confusing about this thread is the attraction it seems to have for witless, frivolous posts from people who should surely have something better to do.

Since May was the only one in a long line of people who managed to get Abu Hamza deported for trial elsewhere (Jordan, was it? at which he was acquitted), I kind of understand where she's coming from. It shouldn't have been so difficult.

And I think she and Cameron are thinking of how to cope with terrorists and the like of those who have gone to join the barbaric IS groups.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me because if we already have laws that cover such things why (again) was it so difficult to deport Hamza?

Or was there just no will to get it sorted? And if not, why not?

It sounds rather pathetic to say you're 'scared' of a political party though. Childish even.
But it isnt. Because political parties have such power. In elections past, I dont think the stakes have been quite so high as this one. Perhaps the stakes were high in the 70s?
I think that people are brave to say they are scared. Especially if they then also face possible ridicule.

thatbags I have wondered that too re Abu Hamza. Either he had managed to squeeze his extreme behaviour just within existing laws or there was not sufficient evidence to be certain of a successful prosecution. I wondered if there had been some breaches of protocols in his surveillance/questioning etc. that could have been legitimately challenged under existing laws and it is that that May wants to change. Don't know that but just my line of thinking.

Pity people in the 30s were not more reactive to the rise of right wing politics in Europe.
