Is wolf-whistling a sex crime?

The DT is reporting that police are investigating after a young woman complained after "lecherous" builders whistled at her. At risk of being shot down, when I was young and in my prime I would have complained if they didn't whistle at me.

They haven't emailed me, where did I go wrong? confused

TriciaF Fri 01-May-15 16:56:47

VQ - of course they're not the same thing, but they stem from the same root ie the male need to dominate the female.
It's only the method that differs, depending on the relationship between the 2 people.

rose, it's probably because you haven't contacted them complaining that poor Poppy is being 'attacked' on this thread...hmm

loopylou Fri 01-May-15 17:02:24

confused with knobs on
IMO wolf whistling is not a sex crime to answer the question

rosequartz Fri 01-May-15 17:05:18

Oh! Got it. Thanks Ana

I was on poor Poppy's side anyway, not about the wolf whistling but about the 'in her face' intrusion of her privacy and prevention of her going about her lawful business.
Perhaps she thought the young man in question was only 18 or 19, he looks quite young and is obviously very immature. I bet his mum is really proud of him (not).

Go Poppy, Go !

Others were on Poppy's side about the escalation from wolf-whistles to more, as well.

rosequartz Fri 01-May-15 17:09:44

Quite a well-balanced thread imo.

rosequartz Fri 01-May-15 17:10:03

(not that that counts for anything)

Having been on the receiving end of both domestic violence and wolf whistles I don't feel they stem from the same root. My ex needed to dominate and control. My suffering was part of his control technique which was designed to make me feel as worthless as possible.

The few times I've been wolf whistled has been a sign of appreciation and made me feel good about myself.

Continuing along the lines of my last couple of posts.
Went shopping with Mrs. P today, parked myself on a table outside Costa and watched the world go by (as you do) while she was dithering over what to buy. I espied many ladies passing by with amazingly attractive minds, which just goes to show, I am losing it. I have noticed though that a nice pair of jeans ups their IQ level. Interestingly when Mrs. P joined me several hours later, all she noticed was how many had their hair coloured ??? I hadn't noticed that for some reason. smile

vampirequeen Fri 01-May-15 17:46:08

grin

Iam64 Fri 01-May-15 21:45:18

Is it me or is that last post by pompa really very unpleasant. Women/wives "dithering about what to buy ……ladies passing by with amazingly attractive minds ….. I noticed though that a nice pair of jeans ups their IQ level"

Sexist, patronising and unnecessary (imo), on this thread which as rose quartz said earlier, has been quite well balanced despite the disparity of views expressed.

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 21:53:42

I too find the thought of a man "d'un certain age' leching young women/girls distasteful, I trust it was an attempt at an ill-judged joke?

pompa Fri 01-May-15 21:57:27

I was referring specifically to my wife dithering - she would be the first to agree.
You have totally misunderstood my post, it needs to be read in context with my earlier ones.

I said earlier that the first thing that attracts men (me at least) to a woman the first time, is not her mind, it's physical. Getting to appreciate their mind comes later.

If you are familiar with my sense of humour, you would have read "Mind" as physical attributes, which IMO are often enhance by a nice pair of jeans.

If you find this sexist - it is - I think women are sexy, viva la difference.

if you find all this too much, then IMO you are taking me far too seriously.

GrannyTwice Fri 01-May-15 22:00:11

No it's not just you - it's what happens when sleazy sexist jokes and comments are greeted with delight and encouraged by other posters. It's pathetic - imagine this 'man' leching after your own dd or dgd as they walked by. Yuk!

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:01:29

FGS get a life - you win - have the forum to your selves.

whenim64 Fri 01-May-15 22:01:48

I ignored the post several times, but I think I have to say that these women passing by could be our daughters or even grandaughters and I wonder if you think about them as real people and not objects to ogle, pompa? How about that older man sitting nearby 'admiring' your young female relatives? Not pleasant and time sexist attitudes were relegated to the past.

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:02:38

BTW I never mention young women, I prefer mature women.

GrannyTwice Fri 01-May-15 22:03:10

I hope you mean it pompa - that is leaving it to us

vampirequeen Fri 01-May-15 22:03:10

I got the joke Pompa grin. I people watch in the same way when DH is 'dithering' in B and Q except like your good lady I notice the negatives about the women but I notice the positives about the men.

pompa Fri 01-May-15 22:06:48

Also if women don't want to be admired, why do they wear clothes that ,make them attractive to the opposite sex.

Don't waste your time on a response. I have left for good. Thank goodness I don't know narrow minded people like a few of you in real life.

whenim64 Fri 01-May-15 22:10:47

pompa stay and talk it through, why not? Women don't all dress to attract men - they have the right to dress to suit themselves.

trisher Fri 01-May-15 22:15:13

Oh it's a joke! I thought it was just the rambling fantasies of some inadequate old geezer and they were best ignored whilst the rest of us continued our discussion. Just a minute.....Ha ha.

Soutra Fri 01-May-15 22:15:53

This is not a response specifically to Pompa, I believe thatbags also said we dress etc with the opposite sex in mind as a basic primitive or unconscious reflex.
IMHO if anybody dresses to appear attractive, that is it, full stop. Men don't come into it!!
If I am having coffee or lunch with a friend or going to my Book Group, or going to the supermarket or out with the dog in the dark, I dress as I please and if it pleases me to make a feeble attempt to look my best, it is nothing to do with men!!

Maybe a decade or two ago. . . . wink

soontobe Fri 01-May-15 22:30:02

I think that there are times when we do, and times when we dont.
And that cuts across all ages from puberty onwards.
