Surely it's whitewave's decision then whether or not to terminate the thread, I'm enjoying it. Maybe everyone is being too 'nice' for some folk.

One thing that I sometimes wonder about, with poster's identity, is whether they're m or f. Most of us seem to be female, some I'm not sure, then there are a few men. I wish there were more men - they add a lot.

I wonder how much it changes the dynamics of grandnset in someones perception of it when they have been to one of the many meet ups that take place? It only occured to me, reading through this thread, how many gransnetters I have met [and, of those they have then met several more so it's almost like a 'how many people removed are we from someone famous/royal etc' scenario.

I am the same on here as I am in real life. I haven't met up with anyone from this board, I have nothing to lose or gain, why would I not be 'real'? People fascinate me, I love to hear the different opinions, often coming from a viewpoint I hadn't been able to imagine for myself. I have also been given some very good advice at times, in a kindly way. Nothing on here has made me feel that it is unreal. The OP reminds me of how it used to be many years ago now, when online forums first started up. I would refer to an 'online friend' and people would look at me as if I was barking. When I did meet up with those friends they were every bit as nice as I found them to be online, and ten years on we are now all very close.

Where else can you find so many people who think as you do? If you head for a thread that interests you, the likelihood is that you will continue to find the same people on there, time and again, and eventually you will become friends.

OH! don't ask me whether this post should be terminated I don't know!!! I am too dithery to decide such a thing. I think posts largely just stop because everyone has said everything they want to say.

Exactly, whitewave. I've never heard of a thread being 'terminated' at anyone's request.

I'm much nicer in real life than I am on GN . I enjoy the cut and thrust of the more controversial threads ( as is apparent) but fully understand not everyone does. However, I don't think its kind to describe them as 'slanging matches' or call us 'self-opinionated' . There are lots of 'soft' threads on GN for people to enjoy and I keep away from most of them because it's not what I want from GN but I don't pass opinions on those who do enjoy those sort of threads. I also think that if you put an opinion forward on eg health care for 'immigrants' you shouldn't complain if it provokes a reaction. I think there's a good mix of topics usually with something for everyone and having a good ding dong I find very stimulating. Today I've particularly 'enjoyed' the Janner thread - it's made me think and there's been a good range of opinions forcefully expressed although some of them are completely wrong ( that's a joke btw)

And I love it when threads meander and grow and diverge - all part of GN's charm. OP's don't own threads and shouldn't be allowed to ask for them to be terminated unless there is some pressing reason - like you could be 'outed' or you've given TMI about others - but this coukd probsbly be dealt with by deleting individual posts

It is strange isn't it Gran2 I never argue politics with my friends as they are of all sorts of different opinions and I wouldn't want to upset them but love debating on GN. I do tend to go on a bit though I am also fine with strong reaction, but find it difficult if it gets too personal.

Gx2, What I said was "Good old slanging match" - these are very rare" and Ash tree did say that "The 'slanging match' comment was very tongue in cheek. " So don't take theses as criticism.
In the 4 years that I have been on GN, I have seen very few threads that have developed into slanging matches, and those have been quickly dealt with by the moderators.
It was not the intention to label controversial threads as slanging.
As you say some OP's start threads that invite passionate controversy. It can be difficult not to chip in two-penneth.

And also the 'just to make them feel clever '. Neither comment was necessary and both were unkind. When I disagreed with a lot of posters on the Janner thread and strongly defended the concept of being fit to plead, I wasn't doing it to make myself feel clever -- I am already that-- but because I felt what I had to say mattered and should be part of the debate

Virtual or not Gransnetter's have helped me no end, I am very happy to be a Gransnetter or Gransnutter what ever you prefer ha ha

I think men are probably brave to come on gn. "Monstrous Regiment" and all that. Mind you I did see a mrshat to-day. My old man says I waste my time in this which is a bit rich from someone who is online most of his waking hours. We send each other emails across two rooms; saves bawling stuff like "What do you want for lunch" and getting "1 o'clock " back.

I think it's a case that if the "self opinionated" cap fits wear it. But for most it does not. However I do think there are a very few that could wear that cap comfortably on certain subjects - and no I am not going to name names, I'm not that brave.
There are some subjects where my opinion would never change ( usually politics & religion), so I guess in those instances I am self opinionated.
