50 Ways to know you are past it !

Sandra Howard has compiled a list of pointers to identify if you are past it in the DM today. I could tick about 45 of them. hmm

Here are a couple of my own.

I have to lean against a chest of drawers when I put my trousers on to stop myself falling over.

I miss the leg hole when I am putting on my knickers. tbublush

I really hurt my back putting on tights when I was in my 50s. I haven't worn them since. Socks and knee highs - I have to lean against a door frame to put them on.

I've always sat on the bed to put pants and trousers on and have always done my bra up at the front. I definitely can't run upstairs or on the flat !

I have to laugh at DH, he sits, pulls on his boxers as far as his knees then does the same with his trousers, stands and pulls them both up the rest of the way together. "Why waste energy standing up twice" says he.

I do agree with her remark about the Queen though. I often wonder how she manages to walk up and down steps without help and walks backwards after laying a wreath.

Whatever she's on, I'd like some.

Haven't got a bath. Haven't had one for over five years. I do not fall over in the shower.
Actually, another reason not to look at the list is that I do not want to know what I have in common with Sandra Howard.

She says that she doesn't like showers-prefers a good soak, well that's okay if you have a loving husband to lever you out of the bath if you get stuck.grin I live alone so have to make do with showers otherwise I'd be stuck forever if I took a bath.hmm

Good grief, she can run up the stairs at 74? AND she can wear high heels (albeit not for too long these days). I have had to wear flat shoes because of intense foot pain for about 10 years. And I struggle to walk up the stairs a lot of the time because of said foot pain and knees that are shot to pieces.

But I DO still stand to put my knickers and trousers on (not tights, can't remember the last time I wore a pair). I don't claim to get my foot in the right hole first time, but I'm not giving up yet tbugrin

Yep! Imagine it. "The oldest woman alive, and still Gransnetting"! grin

loopylou Mon 06-Apr-15 20:50:51

Or desperate!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 06-Apr-15 20:44:49

loopy grin they're hopeful!

merlotgran Mon 06-Apr-15 20:42:08

I hate it as well, ana. It's insulting.

janerowena Mon 06-Apr-15 20:40:04

Where do you find a birth date list? I didn't even think to look for one!

Ana Mon 06-Apr-15 20:23:36

I will certainly know I'm past it if I ever feel the urge to wear a red hat! grin I'm sorry, but I hate that poem.

Granne72 Mon 06-Apr-15 20:14:58

I will never never admit to being 'past it'.
"When I am old I will wear purple", oh i already do !

Good heavens, the woman sounds positively decrepit. It's a wonder she's still alive.

loopylou Mon 06-Apr-15 19:20:27

jingl the scroll down on Gransnet goes back to 1910!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 06-Apr-15 19:15:12

I agree with her about scrolling down the birth date lists on online forms. It's awful to have to go so far down. I start to think "I wonder if anyone else has had to go this far down". grin

merlotgran Mon 06-Apr-15 18:23:53

I don't have to get up in the night....yet but God help anyone who stands in my way first thing in the morning. shock

soontobe Mon 06-Apr-15 18:18:13

I had a quick glance at the list. Saw perhaps 4 or 5 things that might indicate that I am past it, and decided not to delve any further.

Ana Mon 06-Apr-15 18:17:59

I think she's jolly lucky at 74 to only have to get up once in the night for a wee - I've been on double figures for years and I'm only 63! confused

loopylou Mon 06-Apr-15 18:16:35

I think I'm past it on some days when it seems like my 'get up and go' has got up and gone'.

Also when I take off my glasses to read small print...

merlotgran Mon 06-Apr-15 18:13:11

I can't sit on the bed when putting on socks or tights as it's too soft and I get pain down the backs of my legs.

The loo seat, however, is the perfect height and nice and firm.

Ana Mon 06-Apr-15 17:46:50

That should have been 'delicate sensibilities...'hmm)

Ana Mon 06-Apr-15 17:44:54

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3026773/50-ways-tell-past-sit-bed-tights-make-makes-look-OLDER-hate-having-stand-shower.html

For the benefit of those whose delicate sensitivities make it impossible for them to type Daily Mail grin (and in fact I didn't - I just googled Sandra Howard 50 things)

The sitting on the bed thing and the doing up my bra in front and swivelling it round are two things I've done since my teens, so I don't think they count in my case towards being 'past it'.

merlotgran Mon 06-Apr-15 17:31:05

I'm just off to look at the list.

Will report back.

durhamjen Mon 06-Apr-15 17:28:14

I was just typing daily .... in the search bar, and I couldn't, so I'll never know whether I'm past it or not.
