Very very sorry for your loss, every sympathy to your DH and yourself. Sometimes life can be just too cruel.

Dearest Bella I am so sorry to hear that you and your husband are having to bear yet more sad news. Having seen your sister-in-law when you did, and having exchanged messages of love...then that is possibly the best of endings. I would love to hug you right this minute. I thought " here we go again" when DH started to go downhill earlier this week but couldn't get a blood test till today. Phone call from GP at 5.30 to say his haemoglobin had dropped to 6 again and to "hie us" to our local hospital A&E.
This time no long wait, but whisked through to a bay by a doctor who clearly had a plan, obs were done, blood taken for cross matching and instead of trying to find him a bed on a ward, they will give him 2 or3 units of blood overnight and let him come home in the morning or even earlier by taxi if it's the wee sma hours. They will then see him in the Planned Care unit on Thursday, do another blood test and top up if necessary, but also while he is there arrange a course of iron infusions ( which is actually what he needs, long term).
Joined up thinking , well done that doctor, no bed blocking, no long wait in a crowded waiting area, no unnecessary ECGs or x Rays , just fix the problem!

Have they decided why his Hb keeps dropping so quickly?
Have they considered EPO?

Probably malabsorption of iron due to an accumulation of post transplant and UC drugs, plus bowel surgery 6years ago, diverticulosis, possible slight internal bleeding exacerbated by Warfarin etc etc etc. main thing was the pragmatic and joined up thinking tonight.

Immunosuppressive drugs can cause probs. has anyone thought of EPO though?

Remind me, what is EPO?

It's a synthetic form of a compound that stimulates red cell production

Sorry that your husband was poorly again Soutra, but pleased that he got the treatment he needed, when he needed it. There`s a lot of bad press locally about our hospital, but we have no complaints at all, in fact, we think the staff there are absolutely wonderful, especially those in ICU.
