It is a beautiful day and the sun is shining brightly.

We've been to the care home and spent time with our dear pal. He had had a very severe haircut. A pity really, as he has a fine head of silver hair. Never mind, as he said, he needn't have another for six months. My new friend, Margaret, introduced me to a very sweet lady called Christine. They had been given a manicure and proudly showed off their painted nails. Another lady took me by the hand and led me to see her two favourite cushions. I couldn't understand what it was she was telling me but we moved the cushions around the table and stacked one on top of the other. She didn't care for that, so we put them in reverse order and that made her very happy. She settled down with her head on the cushions and dozed. As we were leaving, a male carer introduced himself and asked me from where in the Midlands I had come. I told him Northants. He said, I guessed as much, I'm from Nottinghamshire. It's been about 45 years since I left the Midlands. Funny how one never quite loses the dialect of one's birthplace.

No! Just did it to keep me occupied. The wool was half price and cost £80. Now I don't know what to do with it?
I will say it's wonderfully soft and warm.

Dialects are interesting, when I first started nursing in early 70's I was most indignant when told I had an 'awful Wiltshire accent', clearly years of enforced elocution lessons had been a waste of money - I never did tell my mother

Two weeks ago a taxi driver said to me "do you come from Nottingham or Derby?"
I did live equal distance from both, about ten miles from each, but left 47 years ago I was amazed but he said it was the way I pronounced my e's!! Perhaps we never lose the dialect in which we learn to speak.

loopylou and annsixty In a strange way I was pleased to hear that I still had the Northants dialect. I visited my parents long ago when they had moved to Sutton Coldfield. I was introduced to their neighbour who was a true Brummie and, for a while, I honestly thought that she was taking off/imitating Marlene (on the radio)...only of course she wasn't. I'm so relieved that I didn't have a fit of the giggles.

"Good evening each, my name's Marlene"
Now in which part of my brain was that catchphrase hiding.

It must have been in the 50s on some radio variety show. Any suggestions anyone?

I think it was Educating Archie, with Peter Brough and his dummy, Archie Andrews. I was a great fan of Beryl Reid. I remember her nce on Terry Wogan`s chat show, a much younger Julian Clary was also a guest, she took a fancy to him as a delightful young man, and invited him to tea, I often wondered if he went!

number I'm almost certain that it was Educating Archie. I loved Peter Brough. I also remember Janice Nichols either on Six Five Special or Top of the Pops. Do any of our Kitcheners remember The Black and White Minstrels? I had a crush on the tenor John ??? Seem to think his surname began with B. He was gorgeous. As for Terry Wogan, I've liked him from day one. He's a decent man and has helped to raise lots of money for charity. Oh, and I also had a crush on Steve Race...way back when he wore a cowboy hat.

Can't remember her name but her friend was called Cynthia I think. And she recorded a song (maybe a Beatles' cover) with Arthur Mullard. Her name might have been Hilda!

Yes! I have just tracked it down. As said by nannieoz111 Marlene was a creation of Beryl Reid's and it was on the radio show "Ray's a laugh" with Ted Ray.
