Is trust an issue on Gransnet?

The idea that it is necessary to trust other Gransnetters has been raised a couple of times. However, we post only the information about ourselves and the views we promulgate that we choose to post and we know that this is a public forum that anyone, including non-members, can access freely. We choose whether to put personal information in a profile. Occasionally, we have new posters who are out to cause mischief but they are usually nipped in the bud by GNHQ aided and abetted by members with a keen nose for BS.
Would it really matter if I were not a 64-year-old atheist grandmother of five, with left-leaning political views, living in New Zealand, but was actually a defrocked Conservative gay vicar of 30 living in Wandsworth? Silly and tiresome but hardly serious and a charade that even the most intelligent would find difficult to maintain. (Quite a few North-East and Scottish grannies will have an idea about this.)

Some of us have met other Gransnetters and know their real world identities but, again, that is a matter of choice. So what is there to trust or mistrust?

I'm fairly trusting by nature and assume people are posting honestly. However, this is the internet and you need to be realistic. If someone posts then disappears I just assume they either got something off their chest or didn't feel GN was for them. I certainly wouldn't say anything I wouldn't want overheard.

Better than frying sausages in the nude.

Is she the one who irons wearing only her underwear?

I don't care if X lives in Devon not Derby or if Y isn't really a retired MP.

As someone else said, "trust them to do what?" I'm here to chat and be amused not to make life long bossom buddies.
I'm sure there are one or two people on any forum you care to look at who create a false persona because they think they have boring lives, or just for their own amusement.

Well I have met absent and I guessed right away that she had been a lady of the cloth, it was the saying of grace before we started lunch and the bless you as we left grin

Juliette I think that often our comments aren't answered specifically or individually...It took me a while to get used to it.

pompa Wed 11-Feb-15 23:24:19

You will never be sure

WE should never put anything on an open forum like this that we don't wish the world to know. I would hate it to get out that I was really a wealthy oil barron with a string of race horses, a Roller for week days and Ferrari for weekends. oops, that's the cat out of the bag.

Anya Wed 11-Feb-15 22:57:21

I'm still wondering why Absent is having an identity crisis.

Anya Wed 11-Feb-15 22:56:23

Hi Juliette wine

Ana Wed 11-Feb-15 22:56:00

Amya, I think the reservations expressed by soontobe on another thread brought this on.

Juliette, don't worry, a lot of our posts get swept aside and/or ignored if a thread's moving quickly - you get used to it! smile

Remember that fantastic night we had in Newcastle Absent ? The night when you got the train heading off in the wrong direction and ended up heading North instead of South, and you had to spend the night in Berwick upon Tweed with food poisoning shock

Or was that the bl**dy vicar again?

gillybob Wed 11-Feb-15 22:41:48

Oh come on now Absent no self respecting "de-frocked vicar" would ever spill the contents of his/her purse out on the streets outside Newcastle railway station frantically hunting for their ticket home......... Would they? grin

Grannyknot Wed 11-Feb-15 22:38:51

Hi juliette smile.

thatbags Wed 11-Feb-15 22:36:48

We all are, juliette. Welcome to Gransnet flowers

Grannyknot Wed 11-Feb-15 22:36:41

I mean the heading of this thread.

Grannyknot Wed 11-Feb-15 22:35:35

Nope, not for me (in response to the OP).

Elegran Wed 11-Feb-15 22:35:18

From my one encounter with you, absent in company with a gang of other Scottish and NE gransnetters, I think I can dismiss any thought that you might be gay or 30 (maybe 31 on a good day?) I suppose it is still possible that you are a defrocked vicar, but I doubt it.

I think we trust people unless they prove untrustworthy, but I would add a question - trust them to do what or be what? They are unlikely to abscond with our money, or mug us in a dark alley, or trick us into carrying drugs or explosives. There is no need for us to tell anyone any secrets about ourselves that we would rather not reveal, so they won't be blackmailing us. Our real-life faces and identities are only known if we meet up in the real world, so if we ask advice they can't spread things about us to our family and neighbours.

Do we trust gransnetters not to tell outright lies? Yes, until and unless they get their lies in a muddle and contradict themselves, or tell such blatant rubbish that it is obviously concocted.

Juliette Wed 11-Feb-15 22:34:22

I'm just thrilled if anybody acknowledges me sad

thatbags Wed 11-Feb-15 22:32:58

absent, you are obviously very clever because, although you haven't said anything on this thread that longer-term forum members (descriptive term, not a judgmental one) wouldn't have known already, anyone would think you had from some of the replies wink.

Isn't Newcastle in the north-east? <chugs off to do some geography revision>

I must admit I have tried to hide my true identity on GN by portraying myself as a rather frumpy older woman who likes a wine or 22. A hopeless cook with no talent for art, design or anything else.

In real life I am actually stunningly attractive, teetotal, have a wonderful job as a fashion designer cum master baker with a gallery of all my own paintings ........... grin

Anya Wed 11-Feb-15 22:10:48

What's brought this on?

absent Wed 11-Feb-15 21:58:33

Sorry North-east grannies. We had some great times in Newcastle too. I hadn't forgotten and I do know that Newcastle isn't in County Durham. blush

absent Wed 11-Feb-15 21:46:22

Nothing devious about my comment re North-east and Scottish grannies. It's just that we met up a few times in Scotland and County Durham and I would have had to be a master of disguise to convince them that I was anything other than an old woman.

jingl Australia and New Zealand are at least 1,000 miles apart and have an age-old rivalry a bit like the French and English.
