Is trust an issue on Gransnet?

The idea that it is necessary to trust other Gransnetters has been raised a couple of times. However, we post only the information about ourselves and the views we promulgate that we choose to post and we know that this is a public forum that anyone, including non-members, can access freely. We choose whether to put personal information in a profile. Occasionally, we have new posters who are out to cause mischief but they are usually nipped in the bud by GNHQ aided and abetted by members with a keen nose for BS.
Would it really matter if I were not a 64-year-old atheist grandmother of five, with left-leaning political views, living in New Zealand, but was actually a defrocked Conservative gay vicar of 30 living in Wandsworth? Silly and tiresome but hardly serious and a charade that even the most intelligent would find difficult to maintain. (Quite a few North-East and Scottish grannies will have an idea about this.)

Some of us have met other Gransnetters and know their real world identities but, again, that is a matter of choice. So what is there to trust or mistrust?

It has never occurred to me that people on here are anything other than what they say they are. confused

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 12-Feb-15 10:58:35

And that Annsixty sums up the pointlessness of this thread. hmm

rockgran Thu 12-Feb-15 11:10:59

...as true as I'm riding this unicorn!

rosequartz Thu 12-Feb-15 11:19:49

I have always thought that it must be very difficult to live as Walter Mitty although it is probably a lot easier in a virtual life than in real life.

Ana Thu 12-Feb-15 11:26:34

Not quite the same, I know, but I can't imagine how those men (never heard of a woman doing it) who live a double life with two separate families, neither of which knows about the other, manage it! Sometimes it goes on for years and years...confused

rosequartz Thu 12-Feb-15 11:31:28

Women are too honest wink

harrigran Thu 12-Feb-15 12:17:59

I am what I am, it would be way too complicated to invent an alter ego.
DS's friend has a Ferrari, it is actually older than his wife who is 15 years younger than him.

rosequartz Thu 12-Feb-15 12:38:28

Although I do wonder about one or two posters hmm (not on this thread)

annsixty Thu 12-Feb-15 13:04:51

I don't think people invent alter egos.I think they just elaborate and enhance who and what they are. I told you I was a cynic.

Pittcity Thu 12-Feb-15 13:25:51

Pompa I am blonde! One out of three ain't bad!

pompa Thu 12-Feb-15 13:26:33

Annsixty, you are right, I don't really have a Ferrari, it's only an Aston Martin.

gillybob Thu 12-Feb-15 13:45:58

I certainly wouldn't want to enhance or elaborate who and what I am, annsixty being just me is more than enough to cope with. smile

alternativegran Thu 12-Feb-15 14:04:46

I think you are probably right annsixty although I can understand why an alter ego would be appealing.

I am not sure what you have to do to get defrocked, I heard that it was being drunk in the pulpit or having sex with a parishioner, but that sounds almost tame in todays world so I expect it has to be something really bad. I can understand why a young gay defrocked vicar would choose to inhabit the perceived persona of a 64 year old atheist grandmother whilst licking his wounds. Being a boring type I am now considering what I would choose.

Hi Juliette welcome to Gransnet. I too take with a prince of salt a small amount of postings and only post what I am happy to share. I have had some very pleasant private messages from people here and feel that most people are genuine and some people are very caring indeed. It sometimes makes me think, often makes me laugh and is disconcertingly addictive!

TwiceAsNice Thu 12-Feb-15 18:36:51

Sorry didn't proof read properly should read pinch not prince. Where did that come from!

loopylou Thu 12-Feb-15 19:07:12

Like Katek it never crossed my mind that people may not be who they say they are; perhaps I'm just naive........hmm

Anya Thu 12-Feb-15 19:33:09

Or trusting?

loopylou Thu 12-Feb-15 19:35:03

Absolutely Anya. Probably to my detriment in other spheres in life...

rosequartz Thu 12-Feb-15 19:37:04

Welcome, Juliette!

soontobe Thu 12-Feb-15 20:23:02

It was KatyK, loopylou.

loopylou Thu 12-Feb-15 20:41:28

Oops! Sorry KatyK (and Katek)
Thanks soon , it's been a loooong day.....

NfkDumpling Thu 12-Feb-15 20:46:18

I think/hope the majority of posters are genuine. Why be otherwise? Having a nom de plume gives an opportunity to say what you think. I've had a lot of help on here from people giving honest, straight and good advice. People I may have walked past in the street.

Hey HQ - How about a Gransnet Badge? We could be like a secret society.

NfkDumpling Thu 12-Feb-15 20:47:29

Sorry - Hi Juliette. Welcome wine

loopylou Thu 12-Feb-15 20:50:35

I'd love to meet other GNs sporting badges! smile I've learnt so much from the useful and encouraging posts on GN....and a new addiction!

Faye Thu 12-Feb-15 22:06:49

There was a GNetter who used two different names in the early days. I noticed she ditched one of them when she got them mixed up and I was surprised no one seemed to notice, or maybe others did. grin
