Here we are again...happy as can be...all good pals and jolly good company. Slainte! wine

Galen Sun 08-Feb-15 23:18:30

It's her choice. I'm 70 she's 44, tis her choice!
Fortunately it appears we have different tastes in in clothes so she won't be pinching mine!
Haven't seen her for several years any way

Anya Sun 08-Feb-15 23:19:47

I'm presuming (correct me if this is wrong) that your son intends to live as a woman and then perhaps have gender realignment treatment. That is a huge step and I'm guessing s/he hasn't taken this decision lightly. You say your not surprised. But it must be hard for you, as a mother, to accept this.

Anya Sun 08-Feb-15 23:20:15

You're

janerowena Sun 08-Feb-15 23:21:47

Maybe you need whisky, and red wine right now, but save the champagne for Lucy. It must have taken courage to tell you. I do feel for you, I realise it must be a shock. Did you manage to handle the situation ok, do you think?

janerowena Sun 08-Feb-15 23:22:40

I suspect you didn't see her precisely for this reason.

janerowena Sun 08-Feb-15 23:23:59

She probably needed to keep a distance while she sorted herself out and psyched herself up to tell you.

Galen Sun 08-Feb-15 23:25:01

I'm coping. I've warned Lucy that I may forget as I'm a doddery 70 year old!
We had a long talk tonight ending up with the new recording of Carmina Burana.
The only thing we disagree on is her name!

Galen Sun 08-Feb-15 23:26:52

moon

janerowena Sun 08-Feb-15 23:28:15

Does she have a partner, do you know?

janerowena Sun 08-Feb-15 23:29:39

I hope you can get some sleep. x

harrigran Mon 09-Feb-15 00:39:16

Galen ((hug)) wine

loopylou Mon 09-Feb-15 06:56:52

Galen ((hug)), I too struggle with remembering name changes, or even names when introduced to someone new!

Crafting Mon 09-Feb-15 09:43:43

Galen I assume your son is old enough to had time to come to this decision. Not something to be undertaken lightly as presumably will have to tell all the people he knows /works with etc. If he is obviously unhappy with his birth gender then hopefully it will be a relief for him to be open about his wishes to change. I think you are coping well with this. We all worry about our children and GC no matter what they do with their lives I think it's natural to want them to be happy.

Charleygirl Mon 09-Feb-15 10:08:25

Galen it took an awful lot of courage for him to tell his mother because he would have been uncertain of your reaction, perhaps. As you know he will have to go through at least a couple of years of psychological testing before surgery will be contemplated. Hugs from me also.

Elegran Mon 09-Feb-15 10:13:11

Difficult for you! But she did come to tell you about it in person - that says a lot about your relationship. It will be OK once you get used to it. She is in for a hard time so your support will be invaluable.

Nelliemoser Mon 09-Feb-15 10:24:15

Galen I can see how this is very stressful for you in all sorts of ways. We all just really want our children to have happy and un-complicated lives.

It's telling others about this that is difficult, depending on how you feel your other friends and relatives etc may react.

I just hope your daughter will be happier in her new identity.

Galen Mon 09-Feb-15 11:03:47

So do I ! I've warned her not to knock borrow my pearls!

Galen Mon 09-Feb-15 11:04:15

Nick not knock!

Bellasnana Mon 09-Feb-15 11:07:36

Galen I am trying to imagine how I would feel in your circumstances and I know I would be devastated, but would try to be supportive. It must be similar to grieving for the loss of your son but having another daughter to love. Terribly difficult for all concerned, but a brave move by your son to have confronted what must have been a long-standing issue. I hope she will find acceptance and happiness in her new identity.

Our thoughts are with you.xxflowers

Lona Mon 09-Feb-15 11:07:39

soop Hope your toothache gets sorted this morning flowers

Galen flowers I hope this brings Lucy to a happier place. I always feel that being in the wrong sex body must be one of the saddest, most difficult things to happen to a person.
He/she is still your child and I'm sure you will deal with Lucy in your usual loving way.
(((hugs)))

janerowena Mon 09-Feb-15 11:20:18

I hope soop is at the dentist!

I went to bed worrying about galen. I realised that I was more surprised that 'Lucy' hadn't come out earlier. Hopefully she is amongst the last in this country who feel they have to live a lie - I have a friend of 65 whose husband only 'came out' four years ago.

I'm glad you could joke about the pearls! grin Maybe you could buy him his own strand as a little acknowledgement?

Gagagran Mon 09-Feb-15 11:24:36

Thinking of you at the dentist soop - hopefully anyway. The one time it is not a dreaded visit is when you are in pain and it needs sorting!

Galen - just give Lucy a hug and make her a Graggy cake. She must be so relieved that you have taken it so well. The anticipation of coming out will have been dreadful. You will all get used to the new persona and who knows, may even find it an easier relationship with another daughter instead of a tortured-soul son. flowers and sunshine to you all.

soop Mon 09-Feb-15 11:25:22

Galen If I were in your position I would feel it must be a great relief for Lucy to not have to pretend, and to rely on your unconditional love support. I'm sure that you will discover that people are much more understanding and less judgemental than you might expect. Those who choose to be "difficult/bloody minded" are, in my opinion, not worth bothering about. sunshine

I'm visiting the dentist at 2 o'clock. Cannot wait!

Agus Mon 09-Feb-15 11:50:54

Galen I just want to wish Lucy every happiness for her future and hope she finds the contentment she so deserves.

We, as Mothers always find a way to cope and without a doubt, knowing her Mother is there with love and support will help Lucy deal with whatever lies ahead. x

You know us lot are always here for a blether anytime Galen

Elegran Mon 09-Feb-15 11:58:02

Lucy = light. This could be the light at the end of her tunnel.
