Worst Christmas present?

DGD had an Elsa doll which sounds very similar, there is an on/off switch in her back, might pay to check it out again just in case.

When DD was little I stupidly bought her a crying baby doll. Half way through Christmas Day I turned round the batteries so that it didn't work then told DD the batteries must have died. She was only four so believed me .

My ds bought the doll, and swears there's no switch, and as he's the one who has to live with it, I'm not too bothered!

According to Amazon reviews, the on/off switch is on the doll's upper thigh.

Nearly got the pair for our GDs but glad we didn't now because they were given those 'Lucy' puppies which are supposed to recognise the child's voice and obey certain commands. What a racket, with both the girls trying to get the puppies to respond...

My mother said the worst things she ever bought for Christmas were tin trumpets for two-year old twins. No batteries but boy-power.

Thanks ana, how very intelligent of you to look there! I wish I had read this thread days ago, I spent xmas with Ariel and Elsa, the two of them combined were pretty dreadful. Wailing banshees. I had no idea they had switches, I don't think DD does either! I shall tell her.

Some years ago had bar of Lifeboy soap and a flannel from MIL for 4 consecutive Christmas' [grimace].... Made it pretty clear she didn't like me!

Every year certain family members ask me what I want for Christmas and tell me their budget. I make it as easy for people as I can by copying links to things I would like with a range of prices up to the said budget. Almost every year the same person gets me something that is not on my list and then asks if I like it and is it what I want; knowing full well that it isn't something on my list. Usually I reply graciously, but this year the gremlins got me and I said something along the lines of, "It isn't what I said I wanted, but thank you for the gift, I really appreciate it." It was so unlike me that we were both quite shocked I think. I have decided that next year I shall simply request that the same list as this year be consulted. #feeling rather naughty
I do try to be kind and I honestly value the thought, but I am becoming more assertive I think. (Or do I mean grumpy?)

Christmas has become commercialised. By us as well as the retail industry.

When did we start issuing these lists? Sad really.

I had all nice presents this year, and the family all liked thier gifts too, but Mr Roses says that when he was 5 he was given a lovely drum which mysteriously vanished by Boxing Day.

We laughed about it after the 2nd time and started to put bets on it after the 3rd!
I never expect anything present-wise as just love having family and friends around and everyone enjoying themselves, much prefer buying things for others.
Makes me sound very sanctimonious- am not! Honestly!

When my DD telephoned on Christmas morning, she asked if I would mind taking a look at a present someone had bought for her and she wasn't sure what it was. We still can't decide! They are soft woolen garments that look like the ends of the sleeves of a jumper

DD has a pair if very cosy looking faux fur ankle warmers, which she assures me are very fashionable at the moment.

Sorry not sure how to upload a photo. Thank you for the link Ana. They are not quite like those. They just have one cuff if that makes sense. We have tried them on our ankles but they don't quite sit properly. I think they are hand knitted and maybe are ankle warmers, we can't really think of another explanation although they fit better on arms than ankles. If you can imagine a fluffy hand knitted jumper and cutting the sleeves of just below the elbow? Very soft and cosy but just not sure what!

I did have some leg-warmers many years ago which were like that, only one cuff, but longer of course. Oh well, they might come in handy...or footy...one day!

Stanley Holloway CD The Lion and Albert. I was aghast when I received this from DH a couple of Christmas's ago. I have never listened to it even.

Someone on the radio said they got a pack of cable ties from their MIL and someone else got a pack of 10 shoe laces in different colours.

I usually ended up being asked by all and sundry what everyone else would like for birthdays and Christmas so I'm afraid the lists were my way of making people take responsibility for their own present buying. The budgets are all sensible according to the means of the buyer and this way there are not usually a pile of unliked or unwanted gifts - people mostly get what they need/have asked for. So for instance I would never have decided to buy my son a pair of socks for his main Christmas gift if he hadn't asked for them. They cost, wait for it........£27 as they're special ones to wear when he's rowing. I don't spend the same amount on each child as their needs differ from year to year. Sometimes my husband buys one or other of the children a practical (usually sports or outdoor related) gift in addition to the parental (i.e. something I've bought on behalf of both of us) present. I think because it's what we've always done the children never compare the costs of their gifts.
