name change

I know why, because someone (don't know who) made a rude remark about her previous name.

I had an Aunt Ethel, I was very fond of her.

I remember daps from when I lived near Chepstow. I also remember the blank faces when I moved to Brighton and called them by that name.

Snap rosequartz.. I had an Aunt Ethel too. She was blind, and great fun.
Regarding silverfish..... whatever, I'm sure you are great.

I went from plimsolls to daps when I moved to Bristol from Northamptonshire.

Yes, chick is absolutely fine....

My Aunt Ethel was definitely feisty in spite of being blind. She lived alone all her adult life, and could play the piano and sing beautifully. She once appeared on radio, on a show called 'Have a Go' (I think), with Wilfred Pickles.... anyone remember him?

Has anyone mentioned sandshoes yet? That's what we called plimsolls in East Yorkshire. Pumps when we moved emigrated to Lancs.

Here they are called gym shoes.

I have only been able to come up with this below, only covers two of the different names for the shoe in question, so I have't exactly fulfilled the brief, but do I get points for effort?

I went off on me holiday, me daps were in me pack,
T’Landlady were a fussy sort, “said shoes go on the rack”
I said to her “these ‘ent me shoes, these here are me daps”
Said she “You can call ‘em what you like, I wont stand cheeky chaps!”

I left that place ,went on a cruise, I packed me pumps this time,
The brochure said I’d need them for a foreign sunny clime,
Me feet did sweat, me pumps did smell, the wife did take exception
I had to find some different shoes for the Captains Guest Reception.

Our Humble Shoes

Sandshoes, plimsolls, daps and pumps,
Playground skipping, hops and jumps,
Gym shoes that you took to school,

Black or white or girly pink,

On another note, some names seem to be coming back and others which I thought would never come back again are creeping in.

Apparently Gertrude has disappeared, as has Norman, although names like Lily, Ruby and Emily are still popular.
I am surprised to hear that there is an Ethel.

Some names seem to have survived in their dimunitive forms, eg Connie, Freddie, Harry, Tilly - and Rosie for Rose.

Here gym shoes were for gym in school. Any other time, they were sandshoes.

I buy a new pair of sandshoes every summer but I am finding it more difficult to find canvas sandshoe whitener.
