Commonwealth Games Uniform

I don't want to upset any of the lovely Scottish GN's but I can't help disliking the Commonwealth Games uniform.

I love the tartan and I would appreciate it if anybody could tell me which clan it belongs to or any history belonging to it.

I think it's the pattern and the colour turquoise I find 'shouts' out so loudly.

It just looks so wrong. confused

Yes, rosequartz, I quite like that too.

hmm is this is?

POGS Sun 13-Jul-14 11:51:01

I thought they were models. blush

annodomini Sun 13-Jul-14 11:07:29

I think all three men in the picture are in the Rugby sevens. They look like Rugby players! The dark haired girl is a cyclist - not sure about the blonde.

HollyDaze Sun 13-Jul-14 11:02:37

Was there a photo of the Welsh ones rosequartz?

rosequartz Sun 13-Jul-14 10:54:21

I think the Welsh outfit looks sporty - which is what it is all about!

HollyDaze Sun 13-Jul-14 10:52:01

My thoughts are the same as everyone else: love the tartan but that turquouise is dreadful - it just clashes so badly.

There was an item on BBC news yesterday and about this and the mantra that was repeated over and over again was 'it is meant to be bold' - there's a difference between something being 'bold' and something being 'loud'!

I quite like Canada's outfit - simple and to the point.

rosequartz Sun 13-Jul-14 10:49:20

Is that her on the left of the picture? hmm says it all, really.

And who is the scruffy bloke on the right? Hope he's not the final runner in the relay.

I won't vote because I am neither Scottish or a Scottish resident, and it would be presumptuous to vote. What's the Welsh uniform like by the way?

thatbags Sun 13-Jul-14 10:27:30

Y'all need to know this: it is called the Irn Bru tartan! grin grin grin

Go, Scotland!!

merlotgran Sat 12-Jul-14 22:24:45

Anyone know what England's uniforms look like?

feetlebaum Sat 12-Jul-14 22:20:46

British Caledonian, I meant to say...

feetlebaum Sat 12-Jul-14 22:18:45

Nice one! I am now sitting and pining for the girls who were cabin crew on the old Caledonian Air - they always looked very tasty indeed!

janerowena Sat 12-Jul-14 22:13:28

I showed DBH the photo without telling him what it was. He looked at it and said 'Is it the uniform for a new Scottish airline? If so, it could be called 'Jocks away'! grin

I don't actively dislike the kilts and plaid. The turquoise is a bit bright and the pattern leaves me wondering why bother with it. I wouldn't wear any of it, it but then I don't have to.

What I really dislike are the handbags, and the fact that the shirts and dresses look as if they have been skimpily cut - they look uncomfortable. As my mum would have said, "the material's been cut with a pair of mean scissors." I wonder what material was used.

Deedaa Sat 12-Jul-14 21:35:34

Well at least Stella McCartney's dreadful gold and white Olympic horrors don't look so bad now!

The tartan is fine, but the turquoise clashes hideously and that busy little pattern doesn't work at all with it. I know mixing patterns is really big this year, but it has to be skilfully done and rarely comes off. Jilli (The name says it all doesn't it?) Blackwood may think she's very fashion forward but she's just created a mess.

The Australian uniforms may not be to everyone's taste, but at least they look as if they've been designed by someone with some sort of plan in mind,

Ana Sat 12-Jul-14 20:19:45

Obviously being seen as controversial is more important to her than popularity! grin

POGS Sat 12-Jul-14 20:13:32

I hadn't heard the Ana. What an odd thing to say. confused

Ana Sat 12-Jul-14 19:58:48

Yes, but did you read what the pretentious, self-important designer, Jilli Blackwood, said? "If everyone had liked them, I'd have got it wrong..."!

suzied Sat 12-Jul-14 19:48:31

Looks like a couple of cheap picnic blankets were used here. Hideous.
I vote for English independence after seeing these. The designers should be sacked ( or shot)

annodomini Sat 12-Jul-14 16:15:42

ARE hideous!

annodomini Sat 12-Jul-14 16:15:22

They don't need that garb to be noticed at the opening ceremony. The host nation always brings up the rear of the procession. The socks ate hideous. My dad had kilt socks in that style, but a much lighter colour. We used to hang them up for Santa to fill.

janerowena Sat 12-Jul-14 15:16:30

grin

feetlebaum Sat 12-Jul-14 14:54:56

Ah, the regimental dress of the 3rd Colourblind Lowland Deserters...

thatbags Sat 12-Jul-14 14:28:39

Like it, ana grin

I quite like the tartan too, and I think it would look better with another colour, a less clashy one.

My school uniform socks were that colour! My mum washed them so well, and I'm not heavy on my feet in the sock-wearing-out way, that they faded over time so by the end of first year when I was one of the volunteers (or chosen ones; can't remember) who had to parade in our neatness in front of the next batch of new parents, the headteacher remarked that it was a pity I didn't have uniform socks on!

newist Sat 12-Jul-14 14:21:41

I think the tartan is quite good, The turquoise material is just about alright, but..... when they are put together its awful!!!
