A poem for today

Try to praise the mutilated world.
Remember June's long days,
and wild strawberries, drops of rosé wine.
The nettles that methodically overgrow
the abandoned homesteads of exiles.
You must praise the mutilated world.

Good innit?

I did n't write it!

(found it on the dreaded Twitter)

Makes me feel sad. And happy.

HollyDaze Wed 02-Jul-14 12:00:19

The poem that makes me feel sad and happy at the same time is an old and trusted one:

Leisure

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

(W. H. Davies)

Also sums up our world.

I like all of those.

This one has been on my mind a lot lately

Sometimes - Sheenagh Pugh

Sometimes things don't go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail,
sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war;
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss, sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen: may it happen for you.

It has that same small seed of hope that jingl's has.

Why are you grumpy, jingls my sweet? You are alive, It's July, you posted a lovely poem, people still talk to you. [pollyannasmiley]

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 13:55:17

Darling old feller, we have been married for
49 years though it seems like more.
If you give me a thrill
without taking that pill,
We just might make it to fifty.

That'll do.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 13:56:28

janerowena - only kidding cos that merlot made light of my poem. wink

I never grumpy. smile

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 13:57:25

"people still talk to you"

Yes. There's that too. grin

Gagagran Wed 02-Jul-14 14:05:22

Just coming Jings - been reading the stuff on janerowena's link. Still not found anything suitable as we don't really do mushy stuff and whilst I appreciate the one you posted that's not appropriate either if you know what I mean (nudge nudge)! Thank you anyway and hope you are feeling soothed now!

Anyone got a funny poem I could use?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 14:06:23

Oh! I see!

Lucky Gagagran. smile

janerowena Wed 02-Jul-14 14:15:28

I love that last poem of jingl's, almost wish it did apply! grin

"I Rely on You," by Hovis Presley

I rely on you
like a camera needs a shutter
like a gambler needs a flutter
like a golfer needs a putter
like a buttered scone involves some butter

I rely on you
like an acrobat needs ice cool nerve
like a hairpin needs a drastic curve
like an HGV needs endless derv
like an outside left needs a body swerve

I rely on you
like a handyman needs pliers
like an auctioneer needs buyers
like a laundromat needs driers
like The Good Life needed Richard Briers

I rely on you.

You could just pick one verse?

Gagagran Wed 02-Jul-14 14:37:50

Thanks Jane - think I might have found something on here

janerowena Wed 02-Jul-14 15:07:26

Yes, I can see how you could change that.

merlotgran Wed 02-Jul-14 16:11:47

Dear jingl

I'm sending you a little note
To say I'm sorry wot I wrote
I didn't mean to trash your rhyme
So sending flowers .....Just THIS time. wink
