A poem for today

Try to praise the mutilated world.
Remember June's long days,
and wild strawberries, drops of rosé wine.
The nettles that methodically overgrow
the abandoned homesteads of exiles.
You must praise the mutilated world.

Good innit?

jinglbells said gagagran had spoiled her nice new rattle...
To get it right can seem such a battle ...

Elegran Wed 02-Jul-14 17:10:47

What rhymes with time that doesn't say rhyme?
Jings' work "is a pome " - could we call it a crime?

HollyDaze Wed 02-Jul-14 17:14:25

Or if she's on a roll, call it sublime?

janerowena Wed 02-Jul-14 17:18:51

It's a poem, it isn't a rhyme
gagagran has committed a crime
Jingls had loftier thoughts in her head
than pruning and watering
and weeds in her bed.

I looked up this one earlier for another forum:
"I have spread my dreams under you feet.
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams."
W. B. Yeats.
I don't want to lose my illusions sad

If love was like a river
Flowing out to sea
Then my love would reach you
No matter where you be

If love was like a springtime flower
Each year forming new
Then that is how my love grows
Each time I look at you

If love was like a mountain
Climbing to the sky
Then no-one else in all this world
Could love you more than I.

I wrote that for my children when they were little

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 18:40:02

Eurgh!! I couldn't put any of that stuff (Gaga's link) in a card to my old feller. He's lucky to get 'love from' and a couple of kisses. shock

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 02-Jul-14 18:40:31

Actually, he's lucky to get a card.

A beautiful spring or summer's day always brings this to mind:

i thank You God for most this amazing
day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any—lifted from the no
of all nothing—human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

– e.e. cummings

janerowena Thu 03-Jul-14 11:58:19

I like the first verse.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:12:36

Tbh, when I posted that poem I was thinking of those poor kids, on both sides, Arabs and Jews, murdered for no good reason at all in the middle east. Not there can be a good reason for murder.

A mutilated world indeed.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:13:38

Sorry to sound "high minded".

janerowena Thu 03-Jul-14 12:14:20

Indeed. I thought that was what you were thinking of, actually. It is heart-breaking. For all its faults, we are very lucky to live in the UK.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:16:12

Yes. So far.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:17:39

Oh, get back to nice pomes for God's sake! hmm

#miseryguts

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:18:04

Me that is.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Jul-14 12:32:33

I think HQ get a bit over-precious with this site.

The Obligation to Be Happy
By Linda Pastan

It is more onerous

than the rites of beauty

or housework, harder than love.

But you expect it of me casually,

the way you expect the sun

to come up, not in spite of rain

or clouds but because of them.

And so I smile, as if my own fidelity

to sadness were a hidden vice—

that downward tug on my mouth,

my old suspicion that health

and love are brief irrelevancies,

no more than laughter in the warm dark

strangled at dawn.

Happiness. I try to hoist it

on my narrow shoulders again—

a knapsack heavy with gold coins.

I stumble around the house,

bump into things.

Only Midas himself

would understand.

THE BRIDGE BUILDER

An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and grey,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim-
That sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when he reached the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting strength in building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his old grey head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

(Will Allen Dromgoole)

Maybe if more people felt that way, the world would be a kinder place for everyone.

I did this for DH on our 45th Anniversary last year.

Some people make a fuss of anniversaries over forty
They try to play the whole thing down and act all stiff and haughty

Some people try and try in vain to block the path of time
With energetic hobbies just to keep them in their prime

Those people need to be like us - two spirits brave and bold
Who face up to the honest truth we're getting bloody old!!

Fortunately he agreed with me. grin
