Well happily we no longer have to rent it out (which was only for a few years for complex reasons associated with health cover) and it has gone back to being the cottage in our garden for family and friends.
I agree that prices in the UK are very high and if you are paying that much then I would expect people to be employing cleaners, but that is also very much cheaper to do in England than in France.
It has always been customary for French owners to expect a very high standard of cleaning by the people renting a gite and in the past we have often waited for the owner to inspect the place from top to bottom and count the teaspoons before we could leave. We have also met owners who have been horrified by the fact that British tenants haven't cleaned, but I think that is just a cultural misunderstanding on both sides.
Funnily enough, many years ago, we gave up camping when we found that gites were cheaper!
