It's Best To Know The Symptoms ...

Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder. Somehow I feel better, even though I have it!

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -

Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to water my garden.

As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I head towards the garage, I notice post on the porch table that I picked up from the postman earlier.

I decide to go through it before I wash the car.

I put my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycling box under the table, and notice that the recycling box is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the postbox when I take out the recycling paper anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my cheque book off the table and notice that there is only one cheque left.

My extra cheques are in the desk in my study, so I go into the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my cheques but first I need to push the coffee aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

The coffee is getting cold, and I decide to make another cup..

As I head toward the kitchen with the cold coffee, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye - the flowers need water.

I put the coffee on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers..

I put the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV,I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.

So, I put the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:

The car isn't washed

The bills aren't paid

There is a cold cup of coffee sitting on the kitchen work-surface

The flowers don't have enough water,

There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book,

I can't find the remote,

I can't find my glasses,

And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all bloody day and I'm really tired.

I realise this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.....

It can be fatal

How about this, then, I was speaking to someone on the phone a minute ago, and she asked me for my phone number, I immediately gave her my friends number - she lives thirty miles away, and having realised I had given her the wrong number, could not remember my own number, and had to consult my 'business' card. - I have had a busy day!

rosequartz Thu 26-Jun-14 16:45:28

There was me thinking I had benign senile forgetfulness. BSF - a bit shorter to remember.
Perhaps I have - what was it again? Oh yes, AAADD!

It sounds as if you have too much to do, Holly, I should sit down with a nice brew.

My Mum was like that, well before she reached 40 never mind 60, and I vowed to be different. So I have an obsession to finish one job before starting another.
But the ability is weakening, and I'm becoming more and more like her.

janerowena Thu 26-Jun-14 16:49:19

I think it's just starting.

HollyDaze Thu 26-Jun-14 16:52:21

It would seem there is an epidemic of it grin

Kiora Thu 26-Jun-14 16:58:48

Can it be cured? Is there a support group.

HollyDaze Thu 26-Jun-14 17:05:28

There is Kiora - I have number written down on the pad in the hall, I'll just go and get it ........ this could take a while wink grin

ninathenana Thu 26-Jun-14 18:03:11

I must have been vaccinated. As I haven't got it.......yet !

MiniMouse Thu 26-Jun-14 18:33:51

Do you think it should have an "I" in front IAAADD = InevitableAAADD or is there a cure?

merlotgran Thu 26-Jun-14 18:40:43

Sounds like a simple case of multi-tasking to me. grin

Soutra Thu 26-Jun-14 19:30:47

Eloethan Fri 27-Jun-14 01:02:48

Oh this certainly rings a bell with me.

marigold1 Fri 27-Jun-14 02:02:33

And me !

NfkDumpling Fri 27-Jun-14 08:11:54

Oh, this is so true! Years ago I picked up a tip from an elderly friend - she always carried an old fashioned shopping basket around the house with her. That way she didn't put things down when she got sidetracked so the cheque book, glasses and remote would all be in the basket. Not a cure, but it helps.

Agus Fri 27-Jun-14 08:22:20

Oh, I have had this condition for some time now. Mine was diagnosed as FIT, Fart in a Trance. grin. I have a plaque in the kitchen which says "I know I'm in my own little world, but, they know me here". wink

Aka Fri 27-Jun-14 08:44:24

I'd like one like that Agus confused

Aka Fri 27-Jun-14 08:50:24

The answer is simple; to achieve inner peace and harmony you must finish what you start .

I have just finished a packet of crips, a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine.

Simples!

Agus Fri 27-Jun-14 09:37:23

grin 10/10.

HollyDaze

Blimey, what a relief to finally have a diagnosis!!! Cheers.

My doctor say's he owes you a pint and suggests you send your AAADD theory to Jeremy Hunt, it could save the NHS thousands. smile
