So many lovely songs that I had forgotten. I remembered another one in the bath but I can't remember the title or who it was by. It was a phone call, and there's a line 'Please Mrs Avery, I just want to tell her' (I think) and then it goes 'And the operator said, just 40 seconds more'... and it drives me potty because I want to know what happened. It also reminds me of those days when love affairs and lives were ruined by fathers refusing to allow their four daughters to use the phone.

We didn't have a phone, I had to take 4d and use the phone box at the top of the road.

That's the one! Thank you. 4d? It was about 10p in my day! We used to use the phonebox when we didn't want nosy parents listening in. It was only just before I left home that I was in my mother's room and realised that you could just see the box from the house. I bet she knew where we were when we thought we were being so discreet and sliding out.

I feel so old now, janerowena! 10p - we had never heard of decimalisation when I was a teenager.

Me neither rosequartz - it didn't come in until I was about 20!

I can remember sprinting to our nearest phone box with 4d clutched in my hand to ring my best friend to let her know that I'd just had a letter from my French pen friend who I was just about to visit. She had enclosed a photo of her with her older brother and he was..........GORGEOUS!!!

And the best thing about the 4d phone call was that it was unlimited. My boyfriend and I used to talk for hours! Drove my parents wild and it was very cold and uncomfortable sat on the floor in the hall which was the only place to put a telephone in the 1960s. Must have been worse for him in a cold smelly phone box though
Back to thread, how about 'Away in a manger' especially when sung by Reception children dressed as angels with plenty of tinsel halos? Not a dry eye in any school hall at Christmas.

Mary's Boy Child has the same effect on me, Purpledaffodil - DD's first Nativity play. They sang it beautifully despite the clomping about on the stage as they all got into position.

I had one friend who had a telephone - the rest of us had to use public ones. The complications trying to arrange a night out! We would each have to phone her, she would tell us what everyone else had suggested, we would tell her what we thought and then we would all have to phone again to see what the final decision was. All this depended on finding a phone that worked of course

I feel even older now as I was well past 20 (but not yet 30).

We had to make arrangements for nights out in advance, no changing them at the last minute.

Theme tune to champion the wonder horse

The Shadow Of Your Smile ( think recorded by various artists). It was the theme tune to The Sandpiper, a lovely but sad film with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor from the 60's. Ah, brings back so many memories for me....

Oh yes! I love that one too. So sad.

We had a phone for a couple of years from 1962 because we lived in a Working Men's Club. It lived in its own little enclosed booth in the club entrance and I can only remember it ringing once, when someone was letting my mum know that her brother had died. We all gathered round and stared at it for ages in alarm before my dad eventually stepped up to answer it. We never rang anyone because we didn't know anybody else with a phone!

Another that gets me is "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks..

Oh yes, 'Seasons in the Sun' is so sad.

Whilst 'Seasons in the Sun' leaves me cold, if 'Honey' by Bobby Goldsboro comes on the radio I just can't stop my eyes from welling up when he gets to the bit
