Anyone else watching this? I love it and it makes me so happy to be British. The UK does do this kind of so well.

ninathenana Sat 14-Jun-14 11:07:04

Waiting for the highlights tonight as an alternative to dam footie.

JessM Sat 14-Jun-14 11:34:14

Extraordinary!
They still are 99% white aren't they those guards. i was vehemently disagreed with on GN when I observed this a couple of years ago so just switched on to check. Not much has changed. Look now if you don't believe me!

Crow Sat 14-Jun-14 11:41:33

Do you think that is on purpose JessM? Maybe other colours don't apply to join the Forces.

JessM Sat 14-Jun-14 11:53:57

They do I think in other regiments, but the Guards are a special case. Maybe they are put off applying?

Elegran Sat 14-Jun-14 12:00:37

What are the other demographic proportions like in the guards? Do class and money give applicants an edge? Riding ability for horse regiments might vary with the background of the recruit.

JessM Sat 14-Jun-14 18:31:50

One of the musicians was saying she had been taught to ride in the army.
Guards officers maybe more public school than other regiments? They were certainly all very pink.
In the UK pop, according to St Lenny Henry just now on R4, proportion of ethnic minorities is over 14%.
9% in the forces. excluding Ghurkas.

Ana Sat 14-Jun-14 19:10:09

14%? That seems rather a high proportion for the UK as a whole...

JessM Sat 14-Jun-14 19:20:26

According the to Office of National Statistics: The White ethnic group accounted for 86.0 per cent of the usual resident population in 2011
Seems like the ONS and Lenny are in agreement.

Watching the highlights now - brilliant !! The discipline and accuracy of those young men is to be commended especially when they can hardly see under those bearskins .
I am not bothered by the colour of their skin in the same way as I am not bothered by the colour of doctors I meet.

Tegan Sat 14-Jun-14 19:28:00

I just love seeing so many beautiful horses.

GrannyTwice Sat 14-Jun-14 19:33:08

Twiggy - but that's rather a reverse issue isn't it?

whenim64 Sat 14-Jun-14 20:22:37

Jess this is the thread you're referring to:

I watched the highlights this evening. I was driving out of Waitrose car park today when I saw the 4 helicopters returning to RAF Northolt. I have never seen a Chenook in the sky before quite so close. All of the cars in front of me stopped to look.

HollyDaze Sat 14-Jun-14 21:19:24

Are any of the guards female?

JessM Sun 15-Jun-14 17:35:51

Difficult to tell under all that hat Hollydaze . Some of the musicians definitely are. Is there some technicality about women not fighting in front line so they would not be included in certain regiments?

JessM Sun 15-Jun-14 17:40:29

Looked it up. No women in the infantry, and some other units. For officers women are not allowed in Household Cavalry, Armoured units and infantry. So if the bearskin wearers are infantry then no women.

HollyDaze Sun 15-Jun-14 21:19:04

Many thanks for answering JessM - seems to be a bit of an exclusive club!

whitewave Sun 15-Jun-14 21:23:00

changing the subject a bit - I recorded Diana's dresses last night and watched this afternoon - what a very glamorous and outstandingly fashionable person she was - would still knock spots off anyone even today I think

HollyDaze Sun 15-Jun-14 21:30:42

She would whitewave - I could bore for Britain about her blush

Ana Sun 15-Jun-14 21:36:23

Really...? confused

HollyDaze Sun 15-Jun-14 21:40:39

Yes, I was a great admirer of hers. Every now and again, someone with great charisma enters the world stage and she was one of those people - it's fascinating and I wish I understood it better (well, at all really). There was something very captivating about her.

Ana Sun 15-Jun-14 21:43:26

I'm sorry, but I don't share your opinion, not that it matters at all! smile

Ana Sun 15-Jun-14 21:44:42

(the fact that I don't share it, I mean, not your opinion...!)

celebgran Sun 15-Jun-14 21:46:59

Holly daze couldn't have put it better myself I sae Diana twice she was absolutely stunning no one comes close.
