I was at school in the heart of Birmingham in the late 50s early 60s and our sports teacher Nancy Baldwin always wore lisle stockings with socks over the top and sandal type shoes. They were horrendous and I vowed there and then never to make this fashion faux pas.

Today I walked down town in my new Hotter sandals and found that both my heels had been rubbed raw in the 'unbroken' shoes. I went into Boots and bought some plasters and sat in the local gardens indelicately putting on my other purchase of some Bamboo socks in grey and put them over my pop socks.

The bliss of comfy feet to walk home, however on glancing down I suddenly saw Nancy's feet from 60 years ago - shock horror. confused

Have you let your standards drop like I have ?

After my recent foot op my feet look so awful I am turning more to summer shoes and away from sandals- even a pedicure doesn't make them look much better. Nothing would get me into some of the more comfy types of shoe though - they have to look good I am prepared to put up with some pain.

Very few people can wear shorts I think. They seem to do something to one's backside which trousers or even three quarter lengths don't, must be something to do with ratio of leg to bum. I stick to mid calf cotton or linen in the summer because then I can wear flat sandals when out and about and like annodomini I love my crocs for the house and garden, and when we used to go camping they are the perfect footwear!

....shorts; I've never worn shorts in my life and never will, because my legs are so horrid [fat all the way down with cellulite on the thighs] and, to add insult to injury they're now covered in thread and varicose veins sad.

Katy; not exactly high [about 2 1/2 inches] but I've bought some Hotter shoes for the wedding I'm going to. Have only worn them in the shop and waiting for them to be delivered but they didn't hurt my totally mutant feet at all [bunions etc]. They look a bit weird on the shelf but the S.O. agreed that they looked very smart on. I'll let you know how I get on with them when they arrive. I wish Hotter shoes had been around years ago when my feet first started to turn against me!

Galen Have you tried Pavers? They're very comfy and squishy inside and do a range of widths. I'm a convert wink Comfort over glamour has been winning for years!

Ana Thu 22-May-14 11:21:02

Meant to add, they're very comfortable and light.

Ana Thu 22-May-14 11:20:19

Rieker shoes fit me perfectly - I've just bought two pairs for the summer (ha!).

annodomini Thu 22-May-14 11:03:48

Crocs around the house and garden. On a caravan holiday they are ideal for that trip to the shower block, but I don't wear them for outings. My well-worn and very comfy Hotter sandals are perfect for sightseeing and touring local markets.

Every time I see posts from people who think Hotter are the only people doing comfy but smart shoes I thank heaven I found DB shoes. Hotter shoes just do not fit me, and their styles seem to be mostly strappy, skimpy ones. DBs are substantial but not clumpy.

This thread has taken me back to childhood! New Clark's summer sandals every year = blisters on my heels until they were 'broken in'.

Galen Thu 22-May-14 10:38:59

I haven't been able to find a comfy pair of shoes for years. Hotter do seem to be the best of a bad bunch

rosequartz Thu 22-May-14 10:37:12

Gill, I bought a pair of quite pretty Hotter sandals a couple of years ago thinking they would be comfy and look nice. They went to the charity shop after 3 outings!

I am sure the more clumpy ones would be comfy, but I wanted a pair for 'best' with a slightly higher heel (it was a low wedge).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a pair of Hotter shoes that need to be broken in once the sore heels caused by the first wear have healed.
I have to wear support pop sox when my varicose veins start throbbing - doctor told me to wear them all the time but I just can't. sad

KatyK Thu 22-May-14 10:15:58

I love high heels but can't wear them often due to horrible bunions sad Occasionally I can squeeze myself into a pair but am happier in ankle boots with my jeans or trainers for a long walk.

GillT57 Thu 22-May-14 08:58:15

I find those little slipper type socks great for wearing with bare feet in shoes, but not, of course, open toed shoes. As long as you tuck them in they dont show. They are like trainer liners but in thicker pop sox type fabric. They look ghastly, but once shoes are on they dont show. i wear them with my Hotter shoes, which I have to say, arent quite as comfy as they would lead us to believe......feet have been tucked away all snug in boots and socks all winter, now revealed in all their flaking nail polish horror!

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:47:18

That's no use then Rose. I am not a believer in suffering for the sake of vanity grin

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:42:04

Agus, it just seems to dig in at that sensitive point, like flight socks!

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:37:12

Try wearing a long shirt over the cropped trousers Maggie or a tunic top.

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:34:15

Rose I also have a varicose vein from my calf to my knee and it's not a problem for me to wear the knee high ones.

Maggiemaybe Wed 21-May-14 23:33:59

Cropped trousers. I try them anew every Summer in the hope that this year they won't make my bum look the size of a small planet. And every year I'm disappointed again.

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:26:43

Yes, weren't they on the Les Dawson show? I tried tapdancing when I was in my forties but have no co-ordination.

POGS Wed 21-May-14 23:22:35

Does anybody remember 'The Roly Poly's'. I think that's how you spell it.

They were 4 or 5 older chubbies who tap danced.

Mirror image, get the picture. grin

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:22:28

Twiggy advised today to always look at your backside in a full length mirror before going out.

If I did that I would never go anywhere.

POGS Wed 21-May-14 23:16:59

Shorts.

The size of my backside shorts look downright awful but I do wear them in the garden.

I sure as hell would not put the general public through the nightmare of watching me waddling around in them,. smile

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:13:18

Oh dear, someone else must wear ankle ones or they wouldn't sell them would they?
Would they?

Perhaps everyone else is 105+
