I was at school in the heart of Birmingham in the late 50s early 60s and our sports teacher Nancy Baldwin always wore lisle stockings with socks over the top and sandal type shoes. They were horrendous and I vowed there and then never to make this fashion faux pas.

Today I walked down town in my new Hotter sandals and found that both my heels had been rubbed raw in the 'unbroken' shoes. I went into Boots and bought some plasters and sat in the local gardens indelicately putting on my other purchase of some Bamboo socks in grey and put them over my pop socks.

The bliss of comfy feet to walk home, however on glancing down I suddenly saw Nancy's feet from 60 years ago - shock horror. confused

Have you let your standards drop like I have ?

I know you felt Nankate I have always hated trainers but. Since suffering from plantar fascilitis I have ended up wearing them even with smart trousers or long skirts on a bad day.

I am always in flat or nearly flat shoes these days. Often with pop socks which I think look vile if they show but are better than blisters.
Our gym mistress wore thick socks and sandals as well, along with shorts which showed off her hairy legs.

Sorry but I tittered at that grin it is horrible though isn't it when it creeps up on you like that.

Yes Gransnetters but at least I don't have hairy legs and I do have nicely painted toes, if only you could see them through my layers of socks. grin

Grannyknot Wed 21-May-14 22:49:57

rose my daughter says to me " I see you are wearing not-so-secret socks" grin

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 22:58:33

Poposocks are OK until you sit down and your trousers edge up your legs. And you notice your legs are hairy as well

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 22:59:45

Poposocks? Time for moon

Ana Wed 21-May-14 23:04:37

I love popsocks, I've worn them for years. You'd have to be wearing very short trousers to reveal your legs above them when sitting down!

I hate trainers, but I have to wear closed shoes for archery and in the gym on the boat.
Trainers are the only ones I can get on my swollen left ankle.

Ana Wed 21-May-14 23:06:02

(I'm talking about the knee-high ones of course, not the ankle-high ones - can't see the point of those)

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:09:31

I can't wear the knee high ones because of (shush) what looks like a varicose vein top of the calf area. Please don't tell anyone.

The black ones look OK and I like socks usually in the colder weather.

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:10:39

No matter how much my trousers edge up,my leg, the tops of my pop socks are at my knee confused

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:13:18

Oh dear, someone else must wear ankle ones or they wouldn't sell them would they?
Would they?

Perhaps everyone else is 105+

Shorts.

The size of my backside shorts look downright awful but I do wear them in the garden.

I sure as hell would not put the general public through the nightmare of watching me waddling around in them,. smile

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:22:28

Twiggy advised today to always look at your backside in a full length mirror before going out.

If I did that I would never go anywhere.

POGS Wed 21-May-14 23:22:35

Does anybody remember 'The Roly Poly's'. I think that's how you spell it.

They were 4 or 5 older chubbies who tap danced.

Mirror image, get the picture. grin

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:26:43

Yes, weren't they on the Les Dawson show? I tried tapdancing when I was in my forties but have no co-ordination.

Maggiemaybe Wed 21-May-14 23:33:59

Cropped trousers. I try them anew every Summer in the hope that this year they won't make my bum look the size of a small planet. And every year I'm disappointed again.

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:34:15

Rose I also have a varicose vein from my calf to my knee and it's not a problem for me to wear the knee high ones.

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:37:12

Try wearing a long shirt over the cropped trousers Maggie or a tunic top.

rosequartz Wed 21-May-14 23:42:04

Agus, it just seems to dig in at that sensitive point, like flight socks!

Agus Wed 21-May-14 23:47:18

That's no use then Rose. I am not a believer in suffering for the sake of vanity grin

I find those little slipper type socks great for wearing with bare feet in shoes, but not, of course, open toed shoes. As long as you tuck them in they dont show. They are like trainer liners but in thicker pop sox type fabric. They look ghastly, but once shoes are on they dont show. i wear them with my Hotter shoes, which I have to say, arent quite as comfy as they would lead us to believe......feet have been tucked away all snug in boots and socks all winter, now revealed in all their flaking nail polish horror!

KatyK Thu 22-May-14 10:15:58

I love high heels but can't wear them often due to horrible bunions sad Occasionally I can squeeze myself into a pair but am happier in ankle boots with my jeans or trainers for a long walk.
