Looking at threads/posts from 2012 and 2013 there are so many people who no longer post on here. I realise that some may well have died [though not too many I hope]. I wondered if this was just a normal thing, that people came in , posted for a while, maybe a year and then lost interest.Perhaps that's it.

jingle You've just reminded me - it's also a place to have fun.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Apr-14 18:43:21

And - quoting Tegan - "Why should we want Gransnet to be an aggressive place? Isn't being grown up about being pleasant to people and thinking before we say things, even on a forum?

Yes, it might be about being "pleasant" to people and "thinking before we say things", but it could also be about not taking things personally when they obviously aren't meant that way. And then even expecting a personalised apology! hmm

More ways than one of being aggresive.

There is definitely less nastiness these days. Because some posters aren't posting anymore, for one reason or another. No point in making anyone out to be a saint.

Iam64 Fri 11-Apr-14 18:52:26

What do you mean Jingle, 'no point in making anyone out to be a saint'. It's been a long day, and maybe my brains fogged, but I don't understand your comment.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Apr-14 18:56:49

I'm saying no more.

Nonu Fri 11-Apr-14 19:06:37

Your penultimate post was spot-on, IMO, jingl. And I don't intend to elaborate, either.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 11-Apr-14 19:08:34

Thank you Nonu. I will put my thumb in my mouth and go to shushabyes. smile

I am an unapologetic reader of the Daily Mail - and the Independent. I read the Mail for its very good money and health supplements and because everyday there is at least one article I can get really splenetic about and have a damn good rant. It does me a power of good.

I do miss the more controversial subjects on Gransnet. What I liked about them was the ability for almost all of those contributing to argue points strongly without getting personal or abusive.

I am with Merlot, Gransnet is not as lively a sit was and I find I contribute less.

rosequartz Fri 11-Apr-14 20:11:49

St. Jingles has a certain ring to it.

I shall contact the Pope.

Stansgran Fri 11-Apr-14 20:28:15

I think if you have a busy life you want non aggression. As my mother used to say oh for a little hum drum.

FlicketyB Fri 11-Apr-14 20:58:16

But you need neither read nor contribute to threads you do not like or do not have any interest in. There are many threads which I ignore or after one quick look do not go back to. It doesn't mean that I do not enjoy Gransnet and the threads I do contribute to.

A few months ago there were quite a few ding-dongs which resulted in speculation that GNHQ might be concerned about the reaction from advertisers. I don't know if this is true but what will happen if Gransnet becomes so bland and uninteresting that posts dwindle to the point that nobody bothers with it?

I think I'd rather be ducking behind the sofa every time somebody mentions the DM than terminal boredom.

Ana Fri 11-Apr-14 22:42:32

Me too, merlot, but it looks as though it's heading that way! moon

Aka Fri 11-Apr-14 23:04:56

I'm saying nothing either moon

Tegan Sat 12-Apr-14 00:46:34

Can you elaborate on the 'demanding a personal apology' jingle as, yet again, I seem to be misunderstanding you sad.

absent Sat 12-Apr-14 01:27:54

More than few posters have left Gransnet because they found it boring.

thatbags Sat 12-Apr-14 06:56:35

There is one thing I love, vicariously, about the Daily Mail: it doesn't half stir things up. That's good for a strong and democratic society. Well done, Daily Mail.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 12-Apr-14 09:16:26

Absent that could be because they themselves were boring.

Tegan. Not prepared to make this a thread about a thread. If you can't remember the the post, and the thread, then obviously it had more of an effect on me than it did on you.

whenim64 Sat 12-Apr-14 09:24:23

Mumsnet here I come. This is heading in a predictable direction. sad

merlotgran Sat 12-Apr-14 09:54:00

Is it necessary to leave though? It's not as though you have to pay a subscription. I bet there are a lot of former posters lurking in the hope that things will improve.

Aka Sat 12-Apr-14 10:12:39

I remember it well jingl and so does when I think!

'nuff said wink

petallus Sat 12-Apr-14 10:35:36

Yes, I agree GN has become a lot less contentious.

A sort of online WI?

Pleasant and nice.

Some people may have left through boredom but as well as this I wonder if, after a few years of heavy GN passion, the fire goes out of one's loins a bit.

Just as it does with any relationship.

grin

p.s. It would help if there was less emphasis on correct grammar and having to put asterisks in any word from mild swearing up.

Ana Sat 12-Apr-14 10:38:25

I don't think it's an actual rule about the asterisks, petallus, not everyone does it.

thatbags Sat 12-Apr-14 10:44:32

Bloody hell! I didn't know that petallus! Shit! I'm glad you told me.
