I replied to this on the "dorset site" , doesn't seem to have come up here on the main site .
So, I will re-post , I was reading in my paper that most "Seniors" feel 10 years younger than their actual age .
I think that is true in my case , if not MORE

To me, the age you feel is the one you go to say by mistake, then have to correct yourself if you said it out loud. And yes, it used to be roughly ten years less than my actual age. For some strange reason the gap has widened lately and I have thought I am 45 for a while now. So now I am worried in case my wisdom is not increasing at the same rate that my body is aging. Which is rapidly.

I must say I never wanted grandchildren, but now I wouldn't be without them. Not only because they are joy of life, but because if it hadn't been for them, I'd never have heard of gransnet and not met (virtually) such a diverse and interesting group of people.

I just don't think about how old I feel since I don't know how I am supposed to feel at 73.

That's me told then grin

I have no idea what everyone means when they say they feel older or younger than their age. I could say I feel 40 but what on earth does that mean? Or I could say I feel 90 but what does that mean? I still think age is an obsession amongst all age groups and really doesn't matter a jot. It's health and wisdom that matter, not a number.

nightowl when I say I feel "mentally younger" I am compareing myself to my mum at my age. Her out look on life wasn't that of a sixty year old. More like an old fashioned story book gran, sitting with her knitting ( I know all ages knit but just painting the picture) She had no interest in socialising, music or books and if it had been available 26yrs ago would have had no interest or comprehension of GN.

The fact that I can converse with my DC about things that interest them and laugh at the same things makes me feel young. I'm not sure if I'd not been blessed with DC I would be the same. I am mature enough and experienced enough to give advice when needed though.

Thanks nina just ignore me I think I got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning grin

Maybe it's because I have stuff to do that I must do but keep avoiding. So I will bid you all a happy Saturday and get on with it. Despite my great age and levels of wisdom I have never learnt how to stop procrastinating smile

Bit of a daft question! We know how old we are, so surely that's how old we feel, not matter how much we try to disguise it?

I am happy, that is all I know. Therefore I am lucky.

Nonu Sat 08-Mar-14 17:54:37

I am glad you are happy too , I am supremely happy with my life , would not change a single thing !!

I wonder if those people who feel as if they are in their forties when they are actually in their sixties are perceived in that way by others – especially others who are in their forties.

Nonu Sat 08-Mar-14 18:45:21

That's a toughie , suppose the only way to know is to ask them ?

I have a good friend who is more than ten years younger than I. We are on the same wavelength and have values in common as well as finding humour in similar things. I never think about our ages except when she talks about her children who are very much younger than mine so we are at different life stages. We are equally active and I honestly do not know if we feel our ages differently. I don't actually think I can remember what 30 or 40 felt like.

I don't think age is really the issue. When I think of my parents at the age I am now, they had had such different lives that they acted and thought (and dressed) quite differently from me or my friends now. So I feel younger by comparison.

granjura Sat 08-Mar-14 21:28:29

The other way round for me Icyalittle- my parents always looked amazing and were so fit and such a good looking couple- right into their 80s. I don't think I'll ever live as long as they did- dad was fit and active until about 94 (when I last skied with him).

Had a brilliant day skiing today, but my knee, severely damaged in a car accident when I was young- is really beginning to hamper my wild ski days- which I find frustrating- but love it still.
