Or, at least it was yesterday.I had no idea that 25th May is celebrated all over the world as Happy Towel Day, in memory of the late, great Douglas Adams.Thinking of you, Douglas; gone but not forgotten. So long, and thanks for all the fish.....

confused

My thoughts entirely, Jacey! grin

jeni Sat 26-May-12 13:13:20

And mine. There IS life at the end of the universe! It's a restaurant grin

Anagram Sat 26-May-12 13:15:12

A fish restaurant? wink

Bags Sat 26-May-12 13:16:06

crimson, smile. Writing it in my calendar for future years. Why is it 25 May?

Jacey Sat 26-May-12 13:17:17

The answer to your question Bags is '42'!! grin

Something about it first being celebrated two weeks after his death and has continued to do since then. Why did I know nothing about this till now? Parades in Edinburgh with people carrying towels and wearing dressing gowns etc. Why all this fuss about the Jubilee and something as important as this has been overlooked? Definately a party next year. And, if I wasn't on the codeine for my leg I'd raise a glass to him today; I know, I'll just take an extra tablet to celebrate. Not that it's addictive confused.....

Bags Sat 26-May-12 13:39:59

Oh s*d the codeine! I take it too but I still drink wine. Cheers, crimson.

Bags Sat 26-May-12 13:40:48

Not addicted to either.

Jacey Sat 26-May-12 13:41:08

Ok crimson ...I get the dressing gown reference but not the towel confused ...why towel day? There are so many other good links to the storieshmm

Annobel Sat 26-May-12 13:43:11

After lunch, a nice cold Pymms to the memory of Douglas Adams will go down very nicely. Am taking such a lot of tablets, but have looked at instructions and don't think any of them precludes alcohol. Cheers! wine

Bags Sat 26-May-12 13:45:30

Oh mine do preclude alcohol but I've ignored the preclusions for decades without it being a problem. One just needs to be aware and careful.

jeni Sat 26-May-12 13:46:00

Pymms! What a god idea!

Jacey Sat 26-May-12 13:49:04

I know you're not supposed to take pills with alcohol ...so I take mine with water, then have the alcohol!! wink

But ...often it makes the medication stronger ...rather than preventing it from working confused ...or is that just wishful thinking? shock

jeni Sat 26-May-12 13:51:25

It enhances the effects with some! Makes you very I'll with others.

crimson Sat 26-May-12 13:56:10

According to the gospel that is wikipedia, someone who has their towel with them is in control and is highly respected within the hitchiking community. It also has a lot of uses and it's easier to carry a towel around for a day rather than wearing a dressing gown, which would look odd in some professions [some?].

Bags Sat 26-May-12 14:12:03

Yes, I understand about the enhancing effects (central nervous system depressants, etc). I was extremely careful at first until I found out what the actual effect, if any, was on me. Like most advice, one treats it with respect smile. I expect that's why I'm still here to tell the tale. grin

Bags Sat 26-May-12 14:12:35

oops, gotta check some burgers....!

crimson Sat 26-May-12 14:44:31

Oh man; you'll have me a pill popping alcoholic by the end of the day wink! I know that stuff you take for toothache should never be combined with alcohol [metronidazole?] but, ever since being told by my doctor that, if I did I'd wish I'd never been born I somehow keep wondering how anything could be that bad......not as bad as a barley wine hangover, surely, which I can still remember forty year later after a night of hanging my head out of my flat window thinking that someone was hitting me over the head with a hammer....

Anagram Sat 26-May-12 14:54:24

Oh yes! I remember barley wine hangovers......shock

Bags Sat 26-May-12 14:57:39

Never had a hangover [smug]

Anagram Sat 26-May-12 14:59:38

Not something to put on your bucket list, Bags! grin
