I joined over the road so I could have a look and I say everyone to their own, plenty of room for us all!!

But I think I will stick to Gransnet, I love the way we can swing from serious to light hearted and back again. (anyway I would always be in trouble over there)

There's not a lot of 'pussy-footing' around on GN. That's why I like it. We don't need to bow to someone's higher knowledge, because we are all equal (as Faye remarked). We can chat as if we're doing so over the garden fence, or we can become involved in serious topics where we may disagree strongly with each other. Throughout any such discussions we try to respect the opinions of others. Most important of all is the ability to laugh with each other and at ourselves - and also to be able to ask for and offer support to each other.

Nsube and Hankipanki this site is very supportive of grandparents. We are all equals here, not directed in what we say by senior members. Life is too short to be serious all the time, I was sadly reminded of this just yesterday, my daughter's student who only graduated late last year was killed in a car accident. He was a nice young man and a large community is devastated. The week before my niece's 16 year old cousin was also killed in an accident. My six year old grandson on his birthday on the 25th January was also involved in a car accident when being driven by a family friend. Luckily all were okay but the car was written off. Life is too short to be too serious all the time.
Yesterday I laughed because of some of the comments on Gransnet, I also cried too thinking of the young man's family having to face a long lifetime without their beloved boy. Gransnet sometimes is a great diversion and very supportive. I did not see our comments as an argument, we were the ones who were criticized and we responded among ourselves in a light hearted manner.

How did gout get to mean taste in French and a nasty painful complaint in English?

A chacun son gout - with a circumflex accent on the 'u' in gout. I did get instructions on how to use accents on my English keyboard, but I have forgotten them.

I agree with Jeni, it's lighthearted on the silly threads and serious when needed. What's wrong with that? I for one have enough upset in my life and the silly threads have often kept me sane by making me laugh (last nights party for example)

I have no wish to upset or offend anyone and I refrain from posting when I feel that way!

Some of it is joshing between posters who have known each other for a long time and recognise when the other(s) is/are being genuinely critical and when just teasing cheekily. After a very short while, new posters soon know who not to take too much to heart, but t is not always obvious at first!

If there were a "jester's hat" icon to wear when not being entirely serious it would help. That is, if we remembered to put it on.

Certain people would be wearing it permanently.
