My four year old grandson initially used his left hand to hold a pencil (his father is left handed) then gradually he used his right hand. Last week he was scribbling in my notebook, so I got him some paper and suggested he drew circles and add eyes and mouths on his faces. The next day he drew faces again and as I watched him he started to draw with his left hand, then changed to his right hand and the faces looked the same.

Annobel, my school entered us in the Children's Newspaper handwriting competition and I won a certificate of merit!! In about 1960. My parents framed it and I have it still; it has pride of place in an old holdall in the attic. I exhumed it only last week during my pre-housemove clearance, and proudly exhibited it to my (totally unimpressed) offspring

I taught one group of remedial pupils from the same primary school. They all wrote in the most beautiful italic style. Unfortunately, the content was not quite as good as the style.
When I started school at five I was immediately put up two classes, because I could read fluently and knew all my tables. I missed out on handwriting lessons so I had to teach myself and my writing remains very childish and unformed
I am a rapid touch typist, but I find the computer cannot always keep up with my fingers. I had always imagined that computers did everything instantaneously and I have been disappointed to find that they don't.

My mother , who was an infant teacher, used to draw pictures on the board to illustrate letters! She used to get whispers from the kids 'it's a cat. No ,it's adog. It's an apple, no its an orange '

We were taught to write neatly with nibbed pens and ink from inkwells. If I could manage that when I was 10, why on earth can't I do it with a ballpoint when I'm 62!

Just recently I have been writing simple words for my grandchildren who will start school in September - I really must neaten up, as I can only write perfectly on a blackboard!

It wasn't me! My effort was rejected by my school.

When I was in primary school, every year they made us enter the Children's Newspaper handwriting competition and every year the same girl won it. Since she eventually became a doctor, I imagine things changed...

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I used to have lovely sloping handwriting - my recipe books going back years show this! But now....I find that my head rules my hand as I write. I write really fast, and when I try to decipher it, I sometimes see it as just a scribble. Like Carol, I thought of buying a fountain pen, but I don't think it would make any difference. Perhaps it would be a good idea to practice handwriting like we used to do in primary school.

I had a look at 'the other place', Tosh and had no trouble recognising your alter ego. Remember you are loved here. Good wishes and take care of yourself

My handwriting is horrendous since the advent of computers keyboards that are quicker than writing notes. At one time, I would love treating myself to a new fountain pen, and pride myself on my neat hand - now I can't read my own shopping list, and when I write greetings cards, I don't recognise the spidery mess.

yoga, my handwriting used to be very neat and is now little better than a scrawl, unless I am really trying. Granted, I did have surgery on my right hand, but I don't think that is entirely to blame. I do blame over-reliance on the keyboard which is the enemy of calligraphy.

That referred to jeni's comment, but by the time I had written it tosh and jacey got in between us!

Oh the hands can never keep up with the brain can they jeni. I spend my life writing books and it's essential to get stuff down as I think it and before I forget it. Then it needs serious editing and tidying up before I can send it off to my publisher – and, to be truthful, sometimes even I can't work out what my muddle of letters was actually intended to say.

Does everyones handwriting get worse and worse as they get older? Mine is so erratic these days. One good reason to prefer to type things out

Personally ...I wouldn't want a thread removed because people were made uncomfortable by it ...which I am lead to believe happens in the other place.

Yes ...I think it is right that a comment is removed here if it is deemed not to meet our standards.

We can decide to follow/add to a thread ...or not...without someone else deciding for us.

But ...if they don't like our wide spread of threads and humour ...then they don't have to join us. The same here ...we don't have to join them. However ...if someone likes both ...that's good too

I often join in with our 'silliness' ...other times, it isn't for me ...but that is my choice. I don't always join in the more opinionated threads either ...but my choice again.

I usually check out the threads every day ...often coming back ...but don't always post ...again my choice.

There are a lot of great people on this site ...keep it coming

I love the banter on GN and the humour and will never forget the fun of the trip in the Campervan......but I will also NEVER forget the love and support given to me over my Hubby's diagnosis of MND.
When I was in a 'bad place' and didn't visit GN for a while ...some of you lovely ladies emailed me ( not just once but frequently). It meant so very much.
Phil goes into hospital tomorrow so again emotions are all over the place ...but I have had such a laugh at some of today's comments.
I don't think any comments were posted with malice and we should all post where we feel most comfortable.
I got a lovely welcome from Grannynet today (don't like the fluffy, twinkling images..just not me)...however I feel the friends I have made since lasy May on GN are friends for life xxxx

No problem! You are partly right. My other problem is that my brain goes much more quickly than my fingers and I have no patience! It's the same with my handwriting which is capable of being decoded only by a specially trained apothecary!

Jeni sorry I had to go out suddenly. Just wondered if the arthritis is what makes you make mistakes when you're typing? My friend has a lot of trouble with her fingers and is always dropping things. None of my business really

glass, - I joined as well. I wanted to see if opinions differed much. I don't think I can navigate it easily, though. I've got used to 'us over 'ere', and the way we do things. Each to their own, though. I'm not keen on all the 'moving/jumping around little figures', either.
