My OH asked me this question this evening and I couldn't come up with an answer.

In addition to giving up something for Lent we usually aim to DO something positive as well. A couple of years ago my husband and sons decided that they would start to give blood. As my husband and eldest son are averse (seriously so) to anything remotely medical this was a really big deal for them. Eldest son very nearly backed out the first time and had to be encouraged and cajoled through the door and my husband came very close to passing out, but they all went through with it and now donate blood regularly.

After today. I feel like giving up work!

I think grannyactivist's family has the right idea. Lent is about self sacrifice. Why not give up some of your time to do some good deeds or visit someone who can't get out. hmm

nanaval Thu 23-Feb-12 17:54:42

Sorry that comment sounds very smug and preachy not meant to be.

I`d like to say I`m giving up being a slave, but I don`t think I`ll be allowed to!

NannaAnna Sat 25-Feb-12 01:46:27

I'd like to give up work, but that ain't gonna happen sad
Not just for Lent though ...

Joan Sat 25-Feb-12 07:31:06

Nowt - we're on the basic pension so we've given up enough!!

jakesgran Sat 25-Feb-12 08:04:11

Well said Joan!

I don't think Lent has to be about sacrifice. It's more about focus on the positive as far as I'm concerned.

absentgrana Sat 25-Feb-12 12:16:36

I bet nobody has even contemplated giving up gransnet. (Nor should they.)
