Where is everyone? I know I'm not the only insomniac; been awake since 3.00 and I'm now bored....

harrigran Tue 20-Dec-11 11:52:05

Reluctant to get out of bed this morning. DS and DIL went away for the weekend and we moved in to babysit. They were absolute angels and were both in bed and asleep by 8pm so could relax. GD1 went off to school and left us to play with little one, not one bit of bother, so why am I tired today ?

That sounds amazing JessM, and it's on my wish list. She takes strands from some of my favourite authors. It will be interesting to find out what future she imagines for Dorothea - Middlemarch is my all-time favourite.

Elegran Tue 20-Dec-11 10:41:36

I've looked it up on Amazon and it is available for Kindle .........

Butternut Tue 20-Dec-11 10:34:34

Thanks, JessM - certainly sounds interesting.

JessM Tue 20-Dec-11 10:14:02

Yes! slow down woman! You sound frazzled. I find that eating sweet things in the evening can disrupt my sleep. Or too much, too late. Or curry. dammit.
The book is called Dorothea's Daughter by Barbara Hardy and it is a series of "postscripts" to 19th Century novels. She is an expert in 19th century literature with a 50 year track record. She has identified minor characters and speculated about "what might have happened next". An interesting way to comment on novels and more accessible than her purely academic work which is aimed at other specialists. Still prolific in her 80s.

glamma, relax brew. You have too much on your mind. Don't let Christmas get the better of you. That's not what it's for.

glammanana Tue 20-Dec-11 09:10:21

Up this morning about 5am the brain had not switched off from yesterday and the CHristmas lunch I went to with residents from our development think I must have eaten to much as I had a terrible nights sleep, off to get in present which I forgot to buy, well I say forgot I'm sure I bought it but may have been waylayed somewhere, why is my memory so bad at the moment.confused

Butternut Tue 20-Dec-11 08:12:38

All that certainly sounded worth getting out for............and it's grand to have a good night's sleep. Better than any tonic!

....and the title of the book would be?? (I suspect you left it out for a purpose though - so no worries!)wink

JessM Tue 20-Dec-11 08:06:27

Good morning early risers. Well I don't mean to gloat but I just had a fantastic sleep... This only happens every 6 months or so...
Still off the caffeine pm and feeling more kindly towards peppermint tea (a fresh box bought). Night before was disrupted (tried to co-sleep with DH - it is just too hot under a duvet with that big muscly creature - a bit like sharing a bed with a fan heater) And yesterday I had a really busy day (instead of a very quiet one which is the norm at the moment) - chaired my first U3A committee (agenda stretched across the floor and out of the door) , and went to an evening book launch in london. My eminent cousin, who is still a prolific writer in her 80s , lots of my cousins there as well as her academic colleagues from over the years. Lovely. Yes I know I do need to get out more...

Good morning, everyone! How was the party, Glammanana? hope it was as good as the GN one.

glammanana Mon 19-Dec-11 08:02:33

Thanks for the warning JessM I must say I have a few single ladies and only two gentlemen going so I hope that they do not have to much to drink and think they could be on a single's outing I may have to buy a new hat !!!!

JessM Mon 19-Dec-11 07:43:08

Hope you have a great time!
Someone recounted to me a story about a bunch of Dublin lads, who went for a day out in the Isle Of Man. Great craic and everyone a bit blurry as the coach dropped them home at their doors in Dublin in the small hours. The coach driver had one more left and shook him awake. "C'mon, I need your address if I'm to drop you off lad!" After a while he managed to get a response "10 Hill Street, Douglas, Isle of Man "
So make sure you count em out and count em in.

Goodmorning all. smile

I have a list as long as my elbow to sort the early part of this week, which has had me awake since 4 arranging list then rearranging and I have come back to the first order of things, but there is time for it all to change again.

Have a relaxing lunch glamma if you get a chance, grin

glammanana Mon 19-Dec-11 07:29:34

Good morning girls, early start for me to-day,as most of you know I have arranged for the neighbours at the supported housing development where I live to go for our Christmas dinner and the day has arrived,so having to check everyone is ready for when the taxi's arrive and that everyone who needs their hair done gets to hairdresser;s just after 9am.We don't have to be at restaurant until 1pm but you can bet your life someone will have a problem one kind or the other. So here's to a good day and looking forward to some nice food and a good afternoon, hoping I don't loose anyone whilst I am out.smile

grannyactivist Mon 19-Dec-11 06:32:39

Morning Ariadne and other early birds. I'm wide awake and have too much on my mind to go back to sleep just now. Good time to catch up on here though; I haven't had much opportunity recently.

Ariadne Mon 19-Dec-11 06:22:47

Morning, GA! Do hope you get some rest. x

grannyactivist Mon 19-Dec-11 06:08:56

Hello, anyone up yet? Up at 5am to drive husband to the station as I'll need the car later. Had a late night so very tired today. Still, daughter's coming to collect poorly baby so maybe I can grab a couple of hours snoozing when he's gone home.

Ariadne Mon 19-Dec-11 06:08:39

Good morrow ladies all! ( "six o'the clock, and a cold frosty morning...")

Greatnan Sun 18-Dec-11 17:41:01

I would have killed for a long lie-in when I was working, but since I have been retired I wake at 6 a.m. and either read, surf, or listen to Radio 4.
At the moment, it is 6.38 a.m. on Monday, 19th, in NZ, and I have crept out to the kitchen and made myself a cup of tea. I am just about over jet lag and sleeping at normal times. The cockerel wakes me at about 5 a.m. but I like that 'country' sound.

supernana Sun 18-Dec-11 13:03:59

Gally enjoy!

Annika Sun 18-Dec-11 10:00:08

Morning everyone been up for some time I cant break the habbit of waking early , its not as if I have babies to feed or children to sort out its just DH and the cat ! hmm

greenmossgiel Sun 18-Dec-11 09:30:55

As if, Gally!! wink

Gally Sun 18-Dec-11 09:23:08

Green Are you quite sure it wasn't last night's excesses which are making today blurry?!grin

greenmossgiel Sun 18-Dec-11 09:20:07

Gally you'll be having a lovely time today! Try and keep the Weetabix off the new carpets! I have been awake since 5am reading. So, because I wasn't propped up properly, I've been peering through my varifocals at the wrong angle for about 4 hours....so...my vision is kind of blurry. I'll now have to stay on here till it sorts itself out! confused

Gally Sun 18-Dec-11 07:44:14

I'm up - not by choice! Nell wants her 'bekferst' so she's getting it - Weetabix all over the table smile
