Hosepipe ban, why is this not nationwide?

I saw on the lunchtime news that a hosepipe ban is being introduced in the South East, Kent I think?
Why, when we are on Red Alert for heat is this not being rolled out nationwide, as soon as the Mt office issues the alerts?
Also back in the hot Summer of 1976 we had all sorts of notices/signage up that water was a scarcity, but not now.
Any thoughts on this?

It was a very wet Winter in most places so maybe a hosepipe ban unnecessary?

Casdon Thu 25-Jun-26 16:15:43

It’s not necessary, because there isn’t a national water grid, water delivery systems between different areas of the country are not connected, and not everybody has supply issues. We in Wales don’t pipe water to Kent for example, although we do supply a lot of water to Birmingham. I just checked and it says our water supply is currentlyin a strong, stable position.

I’m north west with higher rainfall than the south east. Our reservoirs are ok. As Casdon posted, we don’t have a national water supply

It's not needed in many places....I'm NW...can't remember our last one? ...my mums north Yorkshire...she had one most of last summer ( she had an exemption due to her age so wasn't an issue)

Yes, it's one of the few advantages to living in a wet climate. Not great when there is drizzle all summer, but at least we don't run out of water.

I wonder how you can have lived long enough to be a gran and not understand that different parts of the UK have different weather?

If the truth were known there is not a water shortage in the South East either...don't take my word for it check the reservoir levels if you feel so inclined.

Problem is that due to lack of investment in infrastructure South East Water can't treat and pump enough water to their customers...can you tell that I am one such customer!

Yes, we had what seemed like endless rain here for weeks and weeks on end. Should at least have topped up the water table, wherever that may be.

The North West has had more rain than it knows really what to do with. The South East, by contrast, has the most intense concentration of population in the UK plus the Kent coast is the favoured drop-off point for the small boats, increasing the population by leaps and bounds and thus generating further demand on an over-subscribed supply.

And privatised water companies have delivered next to nothing as regards improving infrastructure.

But the shareholders are probably happy.

My mother’s response to water shortages in the south was - well we’ve suffered for our water, why should we share it with them
She was a Liberal not a socialist 🌞

Because the Red Alert is not nationwide?

Because water shortages are not nationwide?

Precisely. That's privatisation for you..

We're fine in the NE as far as I know. We have Kielder reservoir.

I don't see there was any need for that comment. 🙁

Here’s ours

The combined storage for the major Essex reservoirs (Abberton and Hanningfield) is at 88%. While this sits slightly below the long-term average for this time of year, water levels are healthy enough to reliably supply the region without any restrictions ahead of the summer.

Having said that
a) we need new reservoirs,
b) they need to fix leaks average 20% water “lost”
c) water should never ever ever have been privatised.

MasieD Totally agree, people too quick to be rude or put other posters down!

In the nation of Scotland we do have a nationwide water service We currently have areas suffering flooding after heavy rain .Its right that hosepipe bans are regional.

Stella14 Sat 27-Jun-26 15:36:20

We have Kielder Water in the North East. We never run low on water. Why would there be a need for a hosepipe ban here?

roxie39 Sat 27-Jun-26 15:50:05

The reason SE Water has felt the need to introduce a hose pipe ban is down to their own inefficiency. Several times over the last couple of years hundreds of residents have had their water completely cut off. After much pressure the Chief Executive resigned last May. He should have been sacked.

nexus63 Sat 27-Jun-26 16:10:22

scotland has only ever had a hospipe ban twice in 50 years, we get more than our fare share of rain.

Susieq62 Sat 27-Jun-26 16:48:27

Here in West Yorkshire we had a hosepipe ban last year as water levels were low! It has been a wet winter/spring so water sticks are high! However we have installed two water butts at home and two on the allotment to be prepared!
We do need more reservoirs per se! We also need water to be nationalised and not at the whim of overseas companies or shareholders who have not invested in the necessary infrastructures to maintain water supplies! Look at Thames Water, they are a disgrace! Yorkshire water has come under scrutiny for its stage dumping into rivers as wel! Actually it is a national disgrace, ask Surfers Against Sewage!
Nothing to do with boat people Padstow13

Wish we had an edit button as I meant to say water stocks
Sewage dumping

Well that was rude!

Tooyoungytobeagrandma Sat 27-Jun-26 17:40:29

Considering where I live was flooded for some while not sure they'd dare place a ban. That said as my local water authority has (last month) increased my bill by £90 a month!! So even if there was a ban I would still water my garden!! With that and an almost 10% increase in council tax they can do one 🤨

ExaltedWombat Sat 27-Jun-26 17:48:54

It’s hot. That doesn’t necessarily imply there’s a water shortage in any particular region.
